Questions:
1. How does the theme of home resonate throughout the excerpt?
2. How did Gertrude Stein’s personality and qualities get her favors and privileges from the soldiers?
3. How does the presence of family impact people during war (such Abel’s godmother and the Whiteheads)?
Matthew Kessler question 2:
Throughout the autobiography Gertrude Stein always seemed to be a very friendly, highly sociable person. She was curious to talk to various groups of people involved in the war and get to know them better. This personality of being so friendly and getting to know so many people seemed to be sort of similar to the way Networking is in our society. Networking basically involves getting to know as many people as you can and make acquaiantances which later may help you out in your career.Gertrude Stein lived her life along the lines of “treat others how you would like to be treated”. This came to benefit her as the soldiers saw all the great helpful things she was doing to help out and all the soldiers treated her with the highest respect and they would help her out with various tasks that she might have needed a hand on. Because of all the good that Gertrude Stein had done such as always giving soldiers rides home when they needed it with her car she had earned the privileges of being more than just a citizen during the war.
