Nathan Nikolic: Can You Help Me College?

Through this first assignment, you will, as a class, introduce each other to some of the resources available to support you in your college careers. These can range from academic resources like the Writing Center to physical and mental health resources like Health/Counseling Services to technology help, food assistance, etc. You may also choose to write about opportunities for enriching your college experience such as student clubs, internships, volunteer opportunities, etc.

Assignment goals:

  1. Identify and investigate a potentially useful Baruch/CUNY resource/opportunity
  2. Share what you’ve learned about this resource with your classmates in a clear and efficient way

Assignment requirements:

  1. One page info-graphic containing the most important information about your resource/opportunity
  2. A 3-minute presentation (recorded video or synchronous/in-person depending on modality) in which you explain what your resource is, how students can use it, and how you and your classmates might benefit from it

Brainstorming (in-class/discussion board post):

Take a look at the following sites, and identify a resource/opportunity you’re interested in.

NOTE: you may choose a resource or opportunity not listed on any of these sites. Just make sure to check with me first. Write your name and the resource you’ve chosen to present on in our Assignment 1 Google doc.

Write a few sentences about why you picked this resource. Then jot down a list of questions you have about how to use it. Why information would you need to be able to take advantage of it? What might be confusing or challenging about using this resource? You’ll want to make sure to clarify this information in your info-graphic/presentation.

Info-graphic Resources:

Below are a few tools you can explore when making your infographic. Give yourself time to experiment with a couple of them. Remember, learning to use a new platform is a learning process. If you’re having trouble, try looking up some YouTube tutorials for your platform. If you’re still lost, come talk to me.

  • Canva
  • Easel.ly
  • Visualize.me
  • Animaker

Info-graphic Peer Review (asynchronous/synchronous):

Share your info-graphic draft with the two partners you’ve been assigned. Include a short paragraph in which you describe:

  1. How do you think the document is coming along? Are you able to fit everything you think is important? Do you think it’s well-organized and clear to your reader?
  2. What challenges are you facing? What would you like help with?

When you offer feedback to your partners, tell them what’s working well but make sure to also include anything that’s confusing to you and any questions/suggestions you have.

Presentations:

Video option: Make a 3-minute video describing your resource, explaining how to use it, and discussing how you think it might benefit your classmates. There are many options for what the visual component of your video can be. You can record yourself the whole time, have your infographic on screen, share a few slides from a presentation, show us how to navigate a particular website, or some combination of these things.

Synchronous/in-person option: Prepare a 3-minute presentation describing your resource, explaining how to use it, and discussing how you think it might benefit your classmates. If you want, you can distribute copies of your infographic. You can also project it or slides, a relevant website, etc. You may also use the whiteboard or any other visuals you want.

Questions to think about:

  1. Does my video/presentation have a clear focus?
  2. Am I being clear about what my resource is and why/how it could be useful?
  3. Am I giving too little or too much information for a 3-minute video/presentation?

Reflection:

Out of all the resources, pick two you’re especially curious to learn more about or use. Why did you pick those? How might they help you achieve your particular educational, intellectual, or professional goals? Answer these questions in a ~200 work discussion board post.
