Yanelsa’s Journal

Week 5

What I did:

  • Wrote reflection paper for FYS
  • Attended Social Friday
  • Took psych quiz on chapter 6
  • Finished psych connect assignments

What went well:

  • Got good scores on the psych assignments

To do list:

  • Assignment #3 for recitation class
  • Watch pre-recorded lectures on chapter 7
  • Review for music exam

Where I left off:

  • Finish writing the Literacy Narrative polished draft

Feelings:

  • This week was pretty good because I didn’t have as much work to do so I had a lot of free time to relax

Prompt: I use rhetoric in my daily life when it comes to my social media accounts. I like to portray myself as a fun, outgoing, and aesthetic person when in reality I’m really shy, barely go places and many would say I’m pretty basic. I post pictures of me and my friends whenever we’re out doing something fun or exploring the city. Social media platforms are very deceiving because people only post on the good days and whatever they think people will enjoy seeing. Even though people shouldn’t believe everything they see online, it is nice being able to show a different side of you that few people get to see or experience every day.

Week 4

What I did:

  • Took notes on chapter 4 and 5 for psych assignments
  • Watched pre-recorded lessons for chapters 4 and 5
  • Took a quiz on chapter 5
  • Submitted the quarterly feedback form

What went well:

  • Got a good grade on my psych assignments and quiz

To do list:

  • Turn in Literacy Narrative polished draft
  • Start writing writer journal prompt for week 5
  • Study for music exam

Where I left off:

  • Finish taking notes on chapter 6 for psych
  • Finish watching pre-recorded lectures

Feelings:

  • This week was okay overall. I caught up on some assignments/readings and I got a head start on the ones due next week as well.

Prompt: Do you practice any of these habits of mind? Out of all the habits mentioned, I feel like I practice curiosity, openness, and flexibility the most. I’m a very open-minded and curious person who has always been the type who asks a lot of questions and is always doing research on topics I know little about. I’m also open to feedback and to hear other people’s opinions and use that in order to educate myself and improve. Lastly, I also practice flexibility when adapting to certain situations and try to always approach things in different ways if something isn’t working.

Literacy Narrative Week 2

What I did:

  •  Took notes for my psychology and business classes.
  • Write the Literacy Narrative rough draft.
  • Finished all assignments on Connect.

What went well:

  • I was able to get good grades on the psychology assignments because of the notes I took.

What was hard:

  • I struggled a little bit when writing the Literacy Narrative rough draft because I haven’t written an essay in a very long time.

To do list:

  • Quarterly feedback form.
  • Chapter 3 psychology quiz.

Where I left off:

  • Need to finish reading and taking notes for the psychology quiz.

Feelings:

This week was a bit stressful because I had a lot to do and not being home made it more difficult for me to do my homework. I also didn’t get to really enjoy the holiday  because of the amount of work I had to do.

How could stories and storytelling fit into your major field of study? What types of stories do you think professionals in your field might find useful?

In psychology, I feel that it is important for the therapist and the patient to have a good relationship and by sharing stories I feel like this could be accomplished or help build the relationship. By sharing relatable personal stories, the patient will most likely open up about certain things after knowing that their therapist has experienced similar things and will feel like they will be understood on a different level.

Literacy Narrative Week 3

What I did:

  • Read chapter 5 and took notes for my business class.
  • Watched pre-recorded psychology lectures.
  • Finished the notes on chapter 3 for the psychology quiz.
  • Took the quiz

What went well:

  • Got a good grade on the quiz

To do list:

  • Start reading and taking notes on chapter 4 for psychology class.
  • Submit quarterly feedback form.

Where I left off:

  • Finish watching the rest of the pre-recorded lectures and take notes.

Feelings:

This week was better because I’m becoming more familiarized with blackboard and Connect and its becoming easier for me to see al my assignments and get them done on time.

Write about what seems challenging in the Literacy Narrative assignment. What strategies can you employ to tackle these challenges? What questions remain or things are still unknown about this assignment?

What has been the most challenging thing about this assignment has been remembering certain things about my past experiences with writing and also some techniques. I’m not very good at writing about myself and it is always hard coming up with content, even though this should be the easiest essay I’ve ever written because its about my own experiences, its hard to recall certain things and details about situations and strategies I used to go by years ago. A strategy I will use when writing the second draft is to use bullet points in order to reorganize everything in a better and more cohesive and hopefully this will also help me remember more details about some of the things I wrote.

Welome Post

Hello everyone! I’m Yanelsa,  I’m a freshman majoring in psychology. One goal that I have for this class is to improve on my writing since its something I’ve always struggled with. One question I have about the assignments is that since there’s no dates included on the syllabus, every how many weeks will we get one of the major assignments assigned?

One writing rule I was taught in high school was to always read my work out loud in order to catch grammar errors easier. I definitely still do this because it helps me find the errors much faster. I’m not much of a writer and the only thing I usually just write grocery lists and for school. I enjoy writing whenever I’m writing about something interesting but when it isn’t I find it very frustrating and difficult.
