Wide Sargasso Sea is a novel created by Jean Rhys which follows a young girl named Antoinette and the great misfortunes she faces being a young creole woman in Jamaican society. The novel is a precursor to another famous novel named Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, giving a back story to the character of Bertha (Antoinette).Over the course of Antoinette’s life she experiences Jamaican culture, the post emancipated society of Jamaica, and how race and gender play huge roles in that society. Antoinette is a creole girl who’s parents are ex-plantation owners and in turn is mistreated by most of the populous of Jamaica. This mistreatment follows her throughout the entirety of her life and leads to her eventual madness and death which is shown in both Wide Sargasso Sea and Jane Eyre.
