Annette- A young an beautiful creole woman, Annette is the mother of Antoinette. Being a creole woman in Jamaica during this time leads to immense discrimination against Annette and Antoinette. She is the second wife of Alexander Cosway and later marries Mr.Mason. After the destruction of her house and the death of her son Annette lives in the country and goes insane.
Alexander Cosway- An ex-slave and plantation owner and owner of the Coulibri estate , Alexander Cosway dies and leaves his wife Annette and Antoinette with his sugar plantation which is collapsing after the emancipation of slavery in Jamaica.
Antoinette- Antoinette is Alexander Cosway and Annette’s daughter. Like her mother Antoinette is a young beautiful creole woman who as a child grows up with a mother who is going insane and no real father. Antoinette and her mother are outcasted by both the whites and blacks of Jamaica for being creole. Antoinette gets sold off to a man named Rochester who treats her extremely badly which leads her to become insane like her mother.
Pierre- Pierre is Alexander Cosway and Annette’s disabled son. Implied to be Annette’s favorite child, Pierre is abandoned by one of the servants of the Coulibri estate after it gets set on fire by the servants, Pierre later dies from the flames.
Mr.Mason- Mr.Mason is Annette’s second husband and new owner of the Coulibri estate because of it. After neglecting Annette’s warnings of Annette of the servants the Coulibri estate is set ablaze which leads to Mason leaving Annette to go insane.
Christophine- A gift from Alexander Cosway to Annette, Christophine becomes a very loyal servant to Annette and Antoinette. A practicer of oheah, Christophine effectively influences both Annette and Antoinette throughout the novel.
Mr.Rochester- Mr.Rochester is a man who is not named in the novel but is implied to be Rochester from Jane Eyre. He is also the man who Antoinette is married to and is not only give Antoinette and her inheritance but is also paid £30,000. Mr. Rochester is one of the leading causes as to why Antoinette goes insane do to his immense mistreatment of her.
Sandi Cosway- Sandi is one of Alexander Cosways illegitimate children. Sandi has a close relationship to his relative Antoinette, to the point where Daniel Sandi’s brother says that Sandi and Antoinette were sexually involved in some way.
Daniel Cosway-Daniel is also one of Alexander Cosways illegitimate children. Daniel writes to Rochester telling him of Antoinette craziness and also tells him of Sandi and Antoinette possible relations. In addition to telling Rochester about these relations he threatens release this information.
Richard Mason- Richard is Mr.Masons son from his first marriage. Richard is the one who arranges the marriage between Rochester and Antoinette after the death of Mr.Mason.
Servants
Amelie- Amelie is one of Antoinette and Rochester’s servants. She is extremely mischievous and sleeps with Mr. Rochester before leaving for Rio. While sleeping with Rochester Antoinette hears which becomes a major influences in Antoinette’s decent into madness.
Tia- Tia is one of the servants of the Couilibri estate and is Antoinette’s friend as a child. Do to their surroundings Tia and Antoinette’s friendship doesn’t work out, Tia steals pennies from Antoinette and later throws a rock at her head during the burning of the Couilibri estate.
Sass- Sass is one of the servants that has been at the Cosway estate for some time after being left there by his mother. Sass leaves the estate after Annette’s money runs out and returns when Mr.Mason and Annette marry.
Godfrey- Godfrey is one of the old servants of the Cosway’s and stays after Alexanders death for a short time. Annette believes Godfrey to be a greedy and untrustworthy servant and predicts his departure.
