“Waterboy” is a classic movie. Movies like this, “Billy Madison”, “Happy Gilmore”, made Adam Sandler who he is today, and even though is newer movies aren’t what most consider “good” you can’t help but respect the guys past. work.
Waterboy is easily one of my favorite Sandler movies. It tells the hilarious story of Bobby Boucher, a homeschooled farm boy who is a bit slow, and his rise to college football fame. One of the most quotable lines in the movies is the catchphrase of the creepy foreign character played by Rob Schneider. Any time Bobby or his team seems to show the tiniest bit of despair Rob Schneider yells “You can do it!” and it seems to rile up the crowd.
As a child I thought this was hilarious. Everything is going wrong and this random guy thinks he’s going to make a difference by simply yelling “you can do it!” Ridiculous, right?
But as time past I thought maybe it’s not that ridiculous. How many times have you doubted yourself? Thought that you weren’t good enough to ask out the girl? Not skilled enough for a promotion? There’s always that voice in your head telling you everything you can’t do.
Sometimes all you need to hear is “you can do it!” It helps to know someone believes in you. When something looks hard it’s easy to get scared away and just give up. You always need to have Rob Schneider in the back of your head yelling “you can do it!” and drown out the voice telling you that you can’t.
You could take it another step, and be the person saying “you can do it!” to others. If you see someone else down on their luck it doesn’t hurt to boost someone else’s spirit.
