Illustrated Quote Analysis

For this project I wanted to find a quote that was relatable, but short and simple, so there would be more room for the image to convey the message. The quote I ended up choosing was “I’m not crazy. My reality is just different than yours[,]” from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” Initially, I had wanted to make the project more obviously Alice in Wonderland themed, but I was convinced to go against the idea to try something more subtle. When searching for images that were large and would properly match my quote, I came across this interesting image of a person in a rabbit suit carrying a newspaper and walking toward the distance. Instantly this image reminded me of the movie “Zootopia” and the furry culture, and how things were similar but perceived differently from what was generally considered “normal.” As a bonus, the rabbit also insinuated ties to the White Rabbit in Alice and Wonderland so I could still include traces of the original source (even though the quote was from the Cheshire Cat). At first, I tried a lot of different methods to incorporate my text into the image, but in comparison to the image, the text was always overshadowed. I tried different colors, weights, sizes, and placements, but I couldn’t establish a hierarchy between the quote and the picture. The image itself was just too busy to properly showcase the words. Ultimately, I simplified the image by removing the background and the color, while extending the rabbit’s shadow so I could bring it more towards the center to balance out the new image I was creating. The font I decided on in its final version was bodoni, because the taller height of bodoni’s characters seemed to match well with the height of the rabbit.
