7 Day Code Switching Journal

Day 1 – My friend and I were at the bagel store when I found myself code-switching. I was speaking politely to the worker while adopting a more aggressive tone with my friend.

Day 2 – When talking to my professor, I was speaking more respectfully compared to when I was talking to my mother.

Day 3 – Today, I found myself code-switching while talking to my siblings. I was more loving and cheerful with the sibling I liked more, whereas I was more rude and ignorant toward the sibling I disliked.

Day 4 – Today, while I was in class, I found myself talking to my actual friends differently than I would to my classmates.

Day 5 -I found myself code-switching when talking to a man versus a woman. I was more flirty and polite with the man, while my communication with the woman took on a different tone.

Day 6 -While speaking to my niece today, I found myself code-switching. I used a more baby-toned and polite voice when talking to my niece, whereas I had more of an attitude when speaking to my sister.

Day 7 – While talking to my dad today, I was very aggressive, but when I received a phone call from my boss near him, I started speaking more politely and respectfully.

  1. I also find myself speaking to certain people more aggressively, probably due to the fact that I have closer bonds with them and know they wouldn’t take it the wrong way.
