Code Switching Log

Day 1: Monday, Baruch Psychology Department

I was doing an interview for my federal work study job; it went really great by the way. As we were sorting out my paperwork, my mother had called me so I had to step out because I can’t just ignore a call from my mother. Since I spoke to her in Spanish, my interviewers had no idea what I was saying.

Day 2: Tuesday, Room 3-215

That day for accounting society, we met with some representatives from this company, RSM. A lot of good information. Once the presentation was over, I wanted to ask some questions. I had to act more professionally than I usually am, and then once it was done, I started walking with a few friends to class and I was able to “Drop the act” essentially.

Day 3: Wednesday, My friend’s house

I went over to my friend’s house, since it’s been a while since I’ve seen him, because he has younger siblings, I had to censor myself and what I saw, I find it rude to just say whatever, especially in front of younger kids.

Day 4: Thursday, Room 5-165

For my accounting society, we got the opportunity to meet with forensics accountants from the FBI. Once they’re presentation was over, I went up to ask one of them a few questions. I tried my best to be as professional as possible, but not overbearingly.

Day 5: Saturday, Guy on the train

I was on my way to this shopping center by Yankee Stadium, and I had a conversation with some guy on the train. He was wearing a shirt of one of my favorite video games, so we started talking. Since he was a stranger, I couldn’t just be my normal self, but it was still a fun conversation.

Day 6: Sunday, Family

We had gone over to one of our family friends, and I saw a cousin of mine I haven’t seen in a while. Since he’s “Challenged”, I had to be very patient with him.

Day 7: Monday, My Room

I was on the phone with my boss from my previous job, and him and I were just discussing things regarding school. Afterwards, my father called me over to the living room for something, and I had to speak in Spanish, afterwards I returned to my regular conversation.

  1. I can definitely relate to code switching whenever there is younger kids around, wether it’s family or friends siblings. I do realize I tend to also censor myself and try to explain stuff more straight forward without trying to break down the logistics.
