Code Switch Week Log

Some moments where I experienced code switching this week were:

  • Speaking English with my brother and Spanish with my parents. Since me and my brother grew up here I think that we got used to speaking english at school young and to other kids so we just continued to speak english between ourselves.
  • Being more reserved with other cousins than the ones I grew up with. I have cousins on my moms side that I am closer to and see more often, so when I visit my cousins from my dads side I don’t speak or joke around the same.
  • At work when there were no customers and it was a slow morning I joke around with my coworkers or we would just look around for random things to do, but when customers walked in and it got really busy we have to suddenly be attentive and quick, as well as be super polite and outgoing.
  • The times I have been stressed this week I try to keep it to myself and when I get home I pretend I’m calm.
  • Getting distracted at home and avoid doing assignments vs being really focused at the library. When I’m at home I get really distracted and end up taking longer to finish my assignments, but when I go to the library it’s really quiet and calm in there so I focus more on doing my work instead of going on my phone.

  1. I’m also the same I like to keep to myself about things that I am stressed about. I also am very focused and locked in at the library compared to being at home going on my phone and being stuck on it for way too long.

  2. I also relate to the core switching that you do when you are with cousins you aren’t as close with. I sometimes will meet cousins that I’ve only really ever met once or twice and I would agree it is very different from being around cousins that I grew up with. I feel a lot more comfortable with my cousins that I am always with.
