Code Switch Article

From the code switch site, NPR, the topic of the article I read was about comedians and racial jokes. They speak about how times have evolved over the course of just a few years, and that people in the audience tend to twist words and jokes they try to make. The author mentioned how they tried comedy for only the summer and felt that people made anything they said be about race. The comedian felt they needed to be cautious with the slightest thing they said. They believed society tries to cancel people over the smallest and misinterpreted things. This makes me feel bad for anyone because it goes to show that people are easily influenced by society and choose to jump to conclusions. They might take something personal or not really understand a joke, twisting it into something it never was, to begin with. I agree that sometimes people take the fun out of things and turn it too political where people can never truly be themselves. However, this would never have been an issue to exist if things like racism, sexism, etc. were present. Nothing much from my point of view changed, it only emphasized it.

  1. What was the topic?

I read the article “Finding generations of family — and history — on Chinatown’s Mott Street”. It was written by Ava Chin and she discussed how her family came to America and their involvement in building the transcontinental railroad. She explained that her ancestors wanted her to write and explain what life actually is like because a lot goes unheard.
She talked about the Chinese exclusion act. How people weren’t able to get citizenship. Women and children weren’t able to come to the U.S however men were. This article gave a story of Ava’s life and it was very interesting to hear. I learned a lot about a different culture and what people of that culture had to go through. I think the issue was presented fairly and you weren’t being sold into anything.

  2. I agree I think things can be taken out of context and made to be what they aren’t especially with jokes. However, on the comedians end they also have to be mindful when using their words and how they phrase things.

  3. I believe I did the same article and the comedians can be right about this. In today’s society we have a lot of outstanding issues so there is a lot of sensitivity when it comes to things like race so comedians are right in the fact that people can be canceled over really anything.
