Code Switch Blog

Day 1 (09/11/23)

During the day I did code switching by getting an order from sticky’s restaurant. When I ordered my chicken tenders with fries, I used words such as “Can I please” and “Thank you” to the worker in which I don’t speak with my friends, family members, etc.

Day 2 (09/12/23)

I have encountered a code switching today by speaking to my parents. Today I spoke to my mom about how college is going and I responded to her differently from how I speak to my teachers. When I noticed code switching, I’ve noticed the difference between speaking to my teachers or friends throughout the day.

Day 3 (09/13/23)

Today I did code switching. I did code switching with my teachers today. In which is like an every day thing. I spoke with my teacher by answering questions like “how does the connection between literacy and self-determination reflect our current culture?” She said, I responded with a professional language that I wouldn’t respond to my friends, boss, etc.

Day 4 (09/14/23)

While I was at home today, I did code switching. I had to translate what they were saying to my dad with customer service. I spoke very professionally with the person because I never met the person before.

Day 5 (09/15/23)

Today I have done code switching. While I was playing Minecraft with my friends we spoke to each other with how our day was and when we did something silly while playing we would laugh. Me and my friends joke around with each other but I wouldn’t do that with someone else.

Day 6 (09/17/23)

I have encountered a code switch because I went to a party that was celebrating my religion of the divine child and there was people I’ve never met before. In the celebration I spoke to my godmother and spoke Spanish with terms that Dominicans would usually know.

Day 7 (09/16/23)

I have done code switching today with my teachers because throughout the day I spoke differently by talking to them with respect and asking questions about the lessons. I met with my boyfriend today and I spoke with love and goofiness.

  1. I definitely relate to the code switch you did on day 4 when you spoke very professionally on the phone. I find it a bit interesting that because we are on the phone with someone we haven’t met and we are asking something of them then it is important to come off as respectful and professional.
