Code Switch Article: Blue Beetle

The NPR article I listened to was “Blue beetle is a true-blue surprise”. The topic of discussion was the Blue Beetle movie. The host was Glen Weldon with guest hosts Cyrena Touros, Ronald Young Jr., and Monica Castillo. They speak about their general thoughts on having a latin based superhero movie. They all loved the movie and liked the diversity that it brought to superheroes.

I agree with many of their points regarding the movie having a more culturally significant background for Latin viewers. It showcased family dynamics and jokes that were relatable but also still portrayed a generic superhero movie. I did disagree with one point they made however, of superhero movie fatigue, because I believe the reason they are “superhero” movies is for that unrealistic aspect. The basic storyline is what makes it what it is and is the reason why so many people watch and tune into the next big cinema superhero movie. They presented the issue fairly and extremely positively even with the downsides of the movie. They related “Blue Beetle” a lot to “Black Panther”, and I think with cinema adapting to being more diverse it allows for many different cultures to connect.  Overall, having a new Latin-based superhero opened many new doors in the DC universe for more representation.
