CODE SWITCHING ARTICLE

The article I chose is called, “Is “home ” still home after 30 years away? The article revolves around Brian De Los Santos. Brian has been living in Los Angeles due to the given opportunity of DACA. He moved to the states at a young age from Mexico and was given the chance to build a new life with lots of new privileges. Examples being driver’s license, work permit, social security, etc. The only downside was that Brian was not able to visit Mexico due to the fear of the government taking away his DACA privileges. It wasn’t until quite recently that Brian was able to. After living so long in LA, Brian wasn’t considered truly Mexican. He never once had that culture within him. Although it did negatively affect his views on himself, he admitted that although people could tell he didn’t have that mexican culture in him, there was always a need to code switch. At the end of the day, he is Mexican-American and if anyone asked him about himself, he tried to identify himself the way he seemed fit. Brian understood that he is what he is and he doesn’t really have to change his way of speaking to people to fit the stereotypes. If people can’t understand the way Brian is, then that is their problem.

I myself am considered Indian-America. I similarly understand that I don’t really have my culture within me. I have been living in the US all my life. The only information I have of my culture is that of what my parents tell me. I admit to code switching of who I am. At the end of the day, I should be proud of where I come from. No one can take away  the experiences I’ve had and judge me for them. I am proud to be living in America and I am proud to be Indian.

  1. I feel the same way as you. I am not ashamed that I code switch and you shouldn’t be either. It is important to be proud of your identity and who you are, so don’t change that!

  2. I feel that many can relate to this article and your view on it. We should be able to carry our heritage and culture with us, while also being able to be our authentic self without being judged.
