Code Switching Log Assignment

(09/12) When I take the express bus to or back from school I code-switch by being very quiet and reserved, and keep my AirPods in with no music so I can listen to my surroundings and stay alert.

(09/16) I went to Manhattan on Saturday with my mom and brother to get Korean corn dogs and to go shopping. I found myself code-switching by being more assertive in the city. I found that it is important to be assertive, especially in the city because you need to get to your destination while there are so many people in the way. You need to speak up and say “Excuse me” or just make your way through.

  1. I also felt a big contrast when I compared how I spoke to my family members and my friends. Even though I can still freely be myself in front of my friends, I feel even more bold to express myself in front of my family members because they know me so well.

  2. I do something similar when I speak to my family overseas. I always try to come across as interested and engaged in conversations with them because I don’t really have too much time to talk to them a lot.
