KEITH HARING

First, analyze the work using the Five Moves.

  1. What makes this piece interesting is: that it attracted my eye since it’s from an artist named Keith Haring and his art style is very nice.
  2. The main components of this work are: the main components are the vibrant colors and the silhouette of different people. Also the black outlines to demonstrate that they are having difficulty to stay up.
  3. Repetitions of similarity occur in: other Keith haring artworks since his art style was pop art and contemporary art.

3a.Binary oppositions are present in:

  1. What is being implied or suggested is: I didn’t see the painters reason for painting this but I can infer that the meaning behind this painting is to show how you need more than just yourself to be successful and no matter how hard life gets they’re will always be people who you trust that would have your back.
  2. I am left with questions about: why the artist chose to paint this? What’s the background knowledge of creating this artwork?

Part 2

  1. What do you need to know contextually about the image? What is the historical context, where and when was the image created? You might need to do some research, or you might be able to piece together the information from the wall text on the work.

What I need to know contextually about the image is who the artist is and what time period the artwork was made as well as finding art principles used. It says the image was created in the period 1990’s and was made in the US and UK.

  1. In terms of the genre of the image, how would you categorize it? Does it remind you of anything you’d seen before? Does it carry any associations to something in your prior knowledge, experience, or observations?

The genre of the image is abstract art. It reminds me of other Keith haring artworks and of Picasso who did abstract art as well. The idea of abstract art brings me back prior knowledge that I learned in my art class in high school which we focused on a painting titled “weeping women” from picasso.

  1. Who do you think is the intended audience for the piece? What kind of person would this “speak to” most? Are you a member of that target audience? What drew you to the work?

The intended audience for the piece might be for people who are feeling down or anyone. I can inference this would speak the most to people who are going through tough times around the age 16 and up. I am a member of that target audience because I am struggling in college. Something that drew me to the artwork was the fact that it was silhouettes of people stacked up on each other.

  1. What do you think the purpose of the piece is? Is this purpose the same as what the creator might have had for the piece? What do you think the creator intended as its purpose?

I think the purpose of the piece is to imply the difficulties of life and how every obstacle that hits your way can be conquered with the help of others. I’m not sure if this is the same purpose that the creator might have had for the piece, I can’t find the artwork.

  1. What gave rise to the need for creating the image? What might have been the historical circumstances that fostered the need for its creation?

Keith Haring’s most artwork was created to give rise for complex issues from capitalism and focused on sexuality and race. The historical context of him creating this artwork is probably because might have been the civil rights era in which many people were at each others throat and there was a lot of hate the different colored people could represent different races living together in harmony.

  1. In terms of the composition of the image, how is it “arranged”? How are the elements organized? What are at the edges of the image, and what was cropped out? What is the point of view of the viewer of the image (photographer, painter, artist, etc.)?

the artwork is composed in a vertical form so it goes up because of the different colored people to show them working together to stand up straight the edges of the art work are compromised of just a black lines to keep the artwork inside of the page and the point of view is in third person

  1. Can the image be read for its Aristotelian elements (pathos, ethos, logos)? How do these elements work? Is there an argument being made in the piece? Which of the elements takes dominance? What is the effectiveness of these elements?

the image shows pathos because you can feel the for the people inside of the painting and it looks like they are struggling to stand upright you can see that the artist drew the lines to signify motion

  1. What does the image make you feel, and why/how?

This image does not really make me feel any kind of way the reason why is because since its so full of nothing but people in a stack so for me personally nothing really resonates

  1. Are there any identity markers present in the image? If so, what is it saying about the intersectional identities of race, ethnicity, religion, social class, gender, sexuality, ability, or other identities?

i see maybe 1 thing that has to do and what would be the different sizes and color that could possibly signify different people or races

  1. What are any final thoughts you have about the work?

I don’t have anymore thoughts about the work of art

  1. I liked the way you organized your answers with the 5 moves; Keith’s sharing art was quite famous in the 1980s and he would express his motifs and themes of social and political issues through his art.
