Throughout the film, Dracula is portrayed as having a very powerful persona, in the sense that we rarely see his weaknesses but when those weaknesses were shown, this changed the dynamic of the film. This showed that even the most powerful have weaknesses that aren’t visible at first but when those weaknesses are shown in bright light, then this would cause a change in the way that the higher-up thinks, acts, and represents himself in society.
As Dracula appears to be powerful and successful, one way that his weakness is shown is through Abraham Van Helsing, a Dutch medical doctor with a large knowledge of modern and folk medicine, who seems to be Dracula’s Sunlight exposure. For instance, as the film continues and Dracula keeps on committing these horrendous actions of sucking the blood of his victims, Van Helsing notices that all victims had a two-bite mark on their necks and that there was no real reason/cause as to why the victims had lost a large sum of blood. When Van Helsing was invited to the home of Jack Seward, the father of Mina Harker. Dracula appears out of nowhere and sweeps Mina away by casting a spell on her, while he is doing that, Van Helsing notices that Dracula’s reflection is not visible through the mirror. When he realized that sort of trait, Van Helsing notified everyone that was a vampire.
This end of the film illustrates a perfect resemblance to the Bourgeoisie and how they feared the idea of being exposed to the public’s eye especially if that exposure was their weakness and their vulnerabilities. This is a perfect reference to the film because Dracula was afraid of being exposed by Van Helsing when Van Helsing showed Dracula that there was no reflection of himself in the mirror, Dracula could not believe his eyes and soon decided to slam the mirrored box on the floor and soon tries to cover his identity by stating that he had a fear of mirrors. Yet, when Van Helsing exposed him, his true identity was shown to light and his reputation was permanently changed for the worse.
After watching the film Horror films have endured in popularity for nearly 100 years because it attract people and watch these fit that allows individuals to endure thrill, adrenaline, fear, and finally an escape from reality. In our society we fear certain things that are just not natural and that we would not do in our regular day-to-day lives. This was pretty interesting how Dracula’s weaknesses are revealed throughout the film.
