Analyzing – Euphoria

Move One:

The show “Euphoria” is HBO’s most watched. The main character in the show is Rue Bennett, she’s a high school student that is struggling with addiction and her experiences with a group of her friends as they face adolescent challenges. Rue describes herself as frequently feeling anxious, empty, and doubtful of themselves. The show puts focus on Rue’s self-perception and inner struggles, throughout the show.

Move Two:

Rue befriends the new girl in school, Jules. Rue and Jules meet through a party and seem to hit it off. Through time, Jules tries to help Rue with her addiction, but eventually Rue starts to develop romantic feelings about Jules but doesn’t know how to express them. Rue starts suspecting her relationship with a guy she meets online because she notices Jules acting weird towards her.

Move Three:

Rue goes back to drugs when she feels stressed out about her relationship with Jules, and uses drugs as a coping mechanism to deal with her emotions, anxiety, and depression. Sometimes it also has to do with her father’s death. She also surrounds herself with people who are in part of the drug business, but they try to make her stop buying drugs from them from all the incidents she had.

Move Four:

In season two, Rue gets into a romantic relationship with Jules, and they also befriend a new student in the school who does drugs. Him and Rue do drugs without Jules knowing. Since, Jules believes Rue has been staying clean. Later on, Rue gets into a risky business with a drug dealer and when her mother finds out about her suitcase full with drugs, and decides to throw it out, which made Rue upset and her mother was trying to seek for her help and putting her back into rehab.

Move Five:

Months later, after Rue being in rehab, her best friend Lexi makes a play about their childhood and her friends that played a role in her life. This showed the characters inner lives and the masks they wear to conceal or protect who they really are. Their shared experiences of hardship showed their support for one another. Rue stayed clean for two months, and ended her relationship with Jules.

  1. I like the way how you broke down the show. Euphoria is a show that has so many hidden messages and it shows the daily lives and situations that teens like us go through on a daily basis which is not easy, so I like that you were able to break it down in a way that is understandable for people who have never watched Euphoria.

  2. I love how your analysis sums up the main points of the show considering there are many messages they are trying to portray through different characters.
