Memorial Memory

A statue that I remember visiting is the Charging Bull in wall street. I remember this sculpture the most because of the way it looks. I was very young when I first saw it and only remember glimpses of what was happening around it. I have not seen it since, so the way I remember it may not be very accurate. The bull appeared to be very tall and large, and although it was bronze, it shined like it was made from gold. I thought it looked very realistic as if it was frozen in place. I remember the bulls expression and it seemed to me as if it was expressing an emotion for the city. I know it is one of the many famous sites to see in New York and so there were a lot of people. Everybody was posing and taking pictures with the bull, including me.

Because it was in the city and in a very busy spot I was very excited to just be there and to be able to see a statue that many people admire. It was nice to see many people gathered in one spot for the same thing and be able to recognize it as art. This bull was created after the stock market crash in 1987 by sculptor Arturo Di Modica. His purpose in creating the bull was to give courage to people during this difficult time and for the bull to represent the diligence of any hard worker.

  1. I’ve never thought of this as a memorial but by the way you explained it, and how much significance it servers to Wall Street along with the Stock Market, I can in fact see this as a memorial now.

  2. I never really looked at the bull as a memorial, but you do make a good point and it is memorable because people will line up just to go see it. I also remember have a similar experience as a kid seeing it and being very intrigued.
