Madison Square Park Memorial

In Madison Square Park I counted four to five large memorials but there is most likely a lot more. If I could categorize the memorials in Madison Square Park, I would separate them into figures of the US people would like to remember, such as former presidents, and then personal memorials that people have created for their loved ones. There were several benches that people dedicated to those who have passed away and even plaques that were purposed as a marriage proposal.

The specific memorial I chose to analyze is a simple small silver plaque with an engraved message. It does not have a date or historical context to when it was made, just the message it is trying to say. It takes up no space in the park except on the wood that it is drilled to. Although there was nobody sitting on this specific bench when I took this picture, I imagine that many people have throughout the day. To me, this memorial seems to define what the purpose of a bench is. To sit down and rest, and to pay attention to small details, which can be found in abundance at a park. I think that the intended audience is anybody walking by and whoever sits at the bench. I think pathos can be found in this plaque. It may help somebody feel calm and at ease with the reminder to do as it says “Take a moment to sit, breathe, and remember.” Although this plaque is small, for those who take a moment to look at it may take in the message and remember it, using it to help them get through the day or any current hardships. The plaque is signed off with “Love, Mick and Cory” and it could be possible that it is a tribute to someone they love or someone they lost but it is not specified to who directly it is for. The plaque is not large in size and many may walk past it but for those who sit on the bench or quickly glance at it are able to receive a message of tranquility.

  1. I didn’t get a chance to see this memorial, however it looks quite interesting because the writing on the chair is actually very true and people don’t take enough to take a step back and breath.

  2. I believe I past this memorial as well and I really loved the text. I think this memorial being placed in a park with a lot of nature around it really nice and it reminds the everyday people to just slow down for a little and appreciate the life around them.
