David Glasgow Memorial

This memorial is interesting because it is a statue of a person which means it was important because there weren’t that many. The main components of this memorial are the gun or sword on his waist and the binoculars. Repetitions of similarity occur in the statue’s color and the sword on the bottom, which is associated with the sword on his waist. Binary oppositions are present in the sword and the binoculars because although they can be used together they aren’t both weapons. It is being implied or suggested that David Glasgow is a fighter. I am left with questions about who David Glasgow is and why he is important.

He is known for his victory at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. It was unveiled in 1881 and is associated with war because he has weaponry. It is intended for people who are interested in the history of our nation. The purpose of the monument is to remember the work of David. He looks serious and ready to fight. This statue gives pathos because it offers people a sense of being serious and that David was a serious man. The identity markers are the weapon and binoculars showing he is involved with fighting. This memorial takes up a lot of space and not many people interacted with it. The memorial wasn’t successful because people didn’t necessarily acknowledge it. I personally think it was cool to look at.

  1. I see what you mean when you say “The memorial wasn’t successful because people didn’t necessarily acknowledge it.” When I walked around to see if anyone paid any attention to any statue, I didn’t really see anyone acknowledging it or paying attention to them.
