WHAT DOES THANKSGIVING MEAN TO YOU?

After reading the article “Turn Off Your Phone for Thanksgiving” by David Leonhardt, I have realized that many of us tend to forget the idea of what Thanksgiving truly stands for. We tend to lose track and forget the things we are grateful for. Many Americans tend to ignore this special holiday and would not get together with family due to the distance, the closeness of self with a family member, job-wise, and so much more. Especially in today’s world where there is technology on the table. Social media has changed the world forever in a sense that even though everyone gets together, It is very hard for people to talk when they are constantly on the phone interacting with their technologies on this special holiday. Thanksgiving should be the time when technology should not come across the table, it is the time for us to see our family members and show them our gratitude.

My idea of Thanksgiving would necessarily agree and disagree with the article in the sense that if I end up using technology, it is to use it when everyone in my family is participating and doing something. For example, playing a family game. I also tend to focus on giving back to my community and helping others during this time. Throughout this month I’ve learned to appreciate my loved ones and be grateful for what I have in this world. By celebrating the holiday on the 24th, I get to close off this month with all my family and get to see some relatives that I haven’t seen in a minute. One tradition I have is that starting from the 1st day of the month I would say something I am grateful for and would not repeat it, so by thanksgiving I would have 24 things that I am grateful for. Tradition-wise, anyone could create their own, but the main purpose of this holiday is to get together with family and enjoy one another’s company.

  1. I think there is need to put away the technology if it is the only time where you can spend time with your family, as technology now of days had became most of people life which is a big problem.

  2. I also wrote about this article and I agree with his suggestion to not always pay attention to our phones. When we are not looking at our phones, we have more time to have spend with out family.
