Madison Square Park Memorial

While wandering through Madison Square Park, the monument that particularly caught my attention was the statue of William H. Seward. Positioned near the Broadway and 23rd Street entrance, its huge size and the historical significance of the seated figure intrigued me. The person presented, William H. Seward holds a notable place in American history as a well-known statesman and politician. I wonder about the impact William H. Seward had in the United States due to his contributions.

The William H. Seward statue was created by the artist Randolph Rogers. The sculpture was presented to the public in 1876. The statue honors and remembers William H. Seward for the important things he did in the history of the United states. He was really important in deciding how the United States dealt with other countries during the Civil War and the time right after it. Seward strongly spoke out against slavery and was part of the group in the Republican Party that was against it. This monument has reminded me of other monuments I’ve seen at different parks throughout the city as most of them present the significance of the individual. I think this monument doesn’t specifically have a target audience, it’s more for people to look at. When someone sees this memorial, the first thing that catches their eye is him holding this elegant pen and paper on his left side, representing his importance. The memorial can be read for its aristotelian element for logos, such as people get curious as they walk past through the monument and get some information. Though, the public didn’t seem to have any interaction with this monument, and it was probably because people had places to be and didn’t have time to stop and interact. Overall, the memorial provides a meaningful historical value and understanding for the public to remember William H. Seward

  1. I find it interesting how many civil war memorials are present there. The one I did was also a civil war memorial and its so amazing how well taken care of they are.

  2. I saw this memorial and I think it’s so interesting how much people can have an impact. I didn’t know who this was so I think this memorial did its job with acknowledgment as viewers can learn about the person right then and there.

  3. I always found it interesting how they make memorials of important people, most of the time it’s after the person passed away so they won’t even know they had that big of an impact on others.
