When Thesis Statements Are Good …

A friend of mine who is also a writing professor just posted this for her students. It’s a characterization (in listicle form!) of what a good thesis statement looks like. For instance:

A good thesis statement…

  1. involves a sense of tension. That is, it isn’t an obvious statement that everyone can agree with, but contains an argument that provides forward momentum for the paper to develop.
