The Black Panther Party was an organization that challenged police brutality, fought for equality, while also providing aid to those in need. This organization become well known for it’s movements and its effect on history. The film, These Women Were the Unsung Heroes of the Black Panther Party, highlighted three influential women that played pivotal roles in the Black Panther Party. Starting with Elaine Brown, one of chairwomen of the party, who was editor of the party paper and to this day remains a political advocate for the African-American community. Kathleen Cleaver, who participated in the Civil Rights Movement and helped co-founder Huey P. Newton be released from prison. Lastly, the film focuses on Angela Davis. Davis was the most recognized woman from the party, she left due to misogyny but remained supporting the movement. The piece shone light to the females who were probably forgotten, explaining their efforts and how they continue to support their community.

After reading this it really made realize that the Black Panther Party were quite inclusive and women played an influential part in their rise. However these women were still very much discriminated against and even after they contributed their names were almost hidden and weren’t spoken about. which is very saddening.
Reading this helped me learn more about the roles of women in the movement. It also shows that they had an impact on the party and movement overall. The three women mentioned were important because of what they each did to help the party and for supporting the movement.
I was a bit surprised to see how many woman had important/influential roles in the BPP. It’s sad that they aren’t talked about as much due to being forgotten and that they left, but still supported, the cause due to misogyny.
When I first learned about the Black Panther Party, I only learned that the BPP was a civil rights group that armed itself against police brutality. However, I was unaware of the significant presence of women among the BPP’s main members. Reading this helped me realize how inclusive the BPP was and how important its female members were.
Reading this made me realize the importance of what some of these women activists had to do with the BPP because they’re not really spoken about when talked about the BPP
It is very important to bring light to these influential women who some may gloss over due to possible misconceptions of the Black Panthers. These women are all extremely intelligent individuals who need more recognition.
I remember being surprised when learning from the film that the Black Panther Party was mainly made up of women. Considering the violence against the Black Panther Party and the relatively low recognition of women within the party, it is wonderful that this film was created because it will bring more attention to women and the Black Panther Party.
