Day 1:
This was the first day that I started using wikipedia and I started by making an account, while doing this process I found it nice that I didn’t really have to link an email with the wikipedia page, so I could just create a username and password.
Day 2:
I started by trying to do the wikipedia adventure game and for a while I was confused because I thought I couldn’t complete mission one. Everytime it would ask me if I was registered or I needed to log in, but whenever I would click one of the options it wouldn’t work. Even trying to click mission 2 wasnt working so after a while I had to stop and try again later.
Day 3:
Today I finished the Wiki adventure and I found it fairly simple to edit wikipedia pages. However the confusing part was for one of the missions it did not allow me to respond to a message on the talk page so that is still something I am yet to do on wikipedia.
Day 4:
I decided to look at two different wikipedia pages and compare them. I first went to Cristiano Ronaldo’s wikipedia which I was honestly not very shocked about how long the page was. You can see information about all times of his life on this page. I then looked at Alex Morgan’s page and she is another very famous athlete however when I looked at her page it was nowhere near as long as Ronaldo’s page. Of course this could be because Ronaldo is one of the most famous people in the world not just for sports, but the interesting part of the page was that the part of their career was not the same and Alex Morgans was much shorter and less detailed.
Day 5:
Today I began to look at the red list and start to think about a person that I might want to do research on. It was pretty surprising to see the extent of the list because there were multiple women from any country you could think of that had done something important, but were not given a wikipedia page. This led me to think that if a man had accomplished the same achievement as these women or even less would they have a wikipedia page and be getting praise for their work.
Day 6:
Today I picked the women that I would be researching from the red list and I decided on researching Joanna Geraghty who is the CEO of the airline Jetblue. When I saw that she was the CEO of Jetblue I was pretty shocked that she did not have a wikipedia page. Jetblue is one of the world’s most well known airlines and likely brings in millions of dollars a year from people buying tickets. I thought it would be interesting to research her and find out about how she got to the position she is in now.
Day 7:
Today I wanted to start researching Joanna Geraghty, but I first started by looking at the board of directors for Jetblue and seeing if anyone on the board had a wikipedia page. I found that Ben Baldanza who is the director of Jetblue has a wikipedia page, yet the CEO of the company does not. Baldanza was the former CEO of spirit airlines and he received a wikipedia page for this reason however Joanna Geraghty does not receive one although she is the CEO of Jetblue a arguably larger airline company.
On that comparison between Alex Morgan and Cristiano Ronaldo it is also important to note as well the gender bias that exist between women’s and men’s soccer as many downplay the significance and players in the women’s league.
I found the Wikipedia Adventure game confusing to play as well. It’s surprising to discover that the CEO of a prominent airline doesn’t have her own Wikipedia page.
I agree that registering a Wikipedia account is fairly simple and fast to make.
