7 Day Log (Melanie Campbell)

Day 1:

  • Melanie Campbell is an African American woman with her PhD in Mathematics. First female student to get her PhD in mathematics. 
  • I would like to orient my search on how she has associated herself with civil rights and how she has built herself a name outside of her academic achievements. 
  • More or less, what is important to know about Melanie Campbell that isn’t acknowledged by a simple google search. 

Day 2:

  • Dr. Campbell is currently a physics professor at the University of Waterloo. 
  • She has also been cross appointed with the school of Optometry and Vision science while also gaining membership of the Waterloo institute of technology. 
  • She conducted research and discovered a method for detecting amyloid proteins to help aid in the detection of alzheimer’s disease 

Day 3: 

  • President and CEO of the nation coalition. Also a member of the national coalition for 25+ years. 
  •  The National coalition has served as advisors to many high ranking government officials such as the president, congressional members, and CEOs regarding any important issues impacting Black America. 

Day 4: 

  •  Wrote an article “All Elections Matter: It’s Time To Make Our Voices Heard At The Ballot Box In 2016!”
  • Low percentage of black population in the north ( New Hampshire 2 percent, Iowa 3.4 percent)
  • Explains the importance of being able to be involved in our government as an African American

Day 5: 

  • Dedicated to providing mentoring and leadership opportunities. 
  • Creator of Black Youth Vote civic leadership 
  • Black male achievement and organizing program

Day 6:

  • From Mims florida 
  • Harris T. Moore was killed in a house bombing, initiated Campbells passion for civil rights 
  • Professional career started in Atlanta, Georgia 

Day 7:

  • Mother and father were teachers and activists which sparked Melanie’s passion for civil rights. 
  • Involved in current leaders at the start of her career that ignited her connections within politics. 
  • Went to college for business and the connections made with the politicians was done outside of her school.
