Reflective Essay

In this project, I aimed to create a compelling biography of a woman in red, using a slideshow as the medium. The rhetorical elements audience, purpose, genre, and medium played a crucial role in shaping my choices. My audience consists of classmates, instructors, and potentially a broader online community interested in historical biographies. My purpose was to inform and engage this audience with the life story of the woman in red I chose, which was Mabel B. Little. I wanted to highlight different aspects of her life. The genre is biographical, but the medium slideshow requires a unique approach to storytelling.

I chose a slideshow because it allows for a visual and concise presentation of information, which I believed would be more engaging for my audience than a traditional essay. The combination of images and text can capture attention and make the narrative more memorable. My choices were driven by the need to present information clearly and compellingly, utilizing the strengths of the medium.

Choosing a slideshow as my mode and medium was a strategic decision. I considered other formats such as videos or podcasts but decided on a slideshow for its simplicity and effectiveness in combining visuals with text. This format enables me to highlight key aspects of Mabel B. Little(the woman in red) life, such as her early years, career, achievements, and the obstacles she faced. Creating a slideshow also allowed me to control the pacing of information delivery, ensuring that each slide conveyed a clear and focused message. This approach helped in maintaining audience engagement, as each slide is introduced fresh and has visually captivating material.

Using a multimedia format like a slideshow offers several benefits. It enhances the audience’s engagement by providing a dynamic and visually appealing way to present information. The integration of images with text helps convey emotions and context that plain text alone might not fully capture. Additionally, a slideshow can be easily shared and accessed across various platforms, increasing the reach and impact of the project. This format also allows for creativity in how the story is told. For example, images of historical documents, photographs of significant events, and visual representations of achievements can make the biography more vivid and relatable. Multimedia formats have the flexibility to accommodate various learning preferences, ensuring content is reachable to a wide range of people.

While the slideshow format offers many advantages, it also comes with constraints. Learning to use the chosen slideshow software effectively takes time if you have never used it before, and I encountered occasional technical glitches sometimes when I was adding images. These issues required patience and resourcefulness to resolve. Additionally, finding high-quality, relevant images was a challenge. I had to ensure that the images I used were either in the public domain or had Creative Commons licenses to avoid copyright issues. It took a long time and it was difficult. Most of the photos I put on my slideshow were from google and all of them said “images may be subject to copyright”. Privacy concerns also came into play when considering sharing the slideshow online. I had to be mindful of how personal information and images were presented, ensuring that they respected the privacy and dignity of the individuals presented.

Sharing my work publicly beyond the classroom involves significant considerations. It opens the project to a broader audience, potentially attracting feedback and engagement from people outside the academic environment. This can be both an opportunity and a risk. Positive feedback and wider recognition can validate the effort and quality of the work. However, it also exposes the project to criticism, which requires resilience and a willingness to learn from diverse perspectives. Furthermore, sharing the project publicly necessitates a careful review of content for accuracy, appropriateness, and ethical considerations. This includes ensuring that all sources are correctly cited and that the presentation respects the subjects’ integrity.

In conclusion, creating this slideshow biography required thoughtful consideration of rhetorical elements, strategic choice of medium, and an understanding of the benefits and challenges of using a multimedia format. The project taught me valuable lessons about the importance of visuals in storytelling, the technical aspects of creating effective slideshows, and the implications of sharing work in a public forum. The process has been valuable in improving my skills to deliver information  in a captivating and easily understandable way.
