Summary of Article
within this article, the author talks about the effects that comments on social networks have on us in different ways. Whether that be in a negative or positive way or more so how they can influence the way we interpret things in the end. There are many talks which tell us how those who comment first initiates how the rest of us would see it but there can also be those to see a negative aspect in things as well even if the majority tends to see it in a more positive. our interpretation of things can vary in different ways, where it can be influenced by just reading comments on a post. there are psychological aspects when it comes to comments on the posts we see on social media, some are considered minimal to us and there are others that can be greater than we think and could be something we just never noticed.
Reflection
with this article, it provides information where comments can influence the way we can interpret things that we see around in certain posts as well as what we do with the information and tone that is given to us. And so with reviewing this it can be useful for me since I am talking about the show the office which is a show on its own where many people have different opinions on it and to have people actually express it through social media and an account that is dedicated to it can certainly give us a new or different perspective on how we see things or we start to think that we should give our own perspective on it whether it deals with agreeing to it or disagreeing.
Selected Quotes
“Uncivil user comments, especially on less familiar topics, influence how readers interpret the preceding information.”
“It also turns out that exposure to online negativity makes our own thinking negative – reading uncivil comments can immediately increase readers’ own hostile cognitions. To sum up, we are all subject to social influence online. Reading other people’s opinions can influence our perceptions, thinking, and even behaviors.”
“Reading other people’s comments can even influence what kind of comments we publish ourselves.”
“In April 2016 The Guardian analyzed 70m user comments left on its site since 2006 and discovered that abusive comments tend to produce more abusive comments, and eventually lead to avalanches of online aggression. According to the findings, mobs form very quickly in the comment sections.”
“This can also work the other way round, i. e. positive comments can inspire people to leave more positive comments. Psychology says that the first comment is incredibly important for shaping the overall positive or negative tone of the discussion. ”
“These are classic examples of emotional contagion online. Whether or not we realize it, other people’s emotions infect us and can have an influence on what we post.”
Fieldwork Notes
Within this site, it looks the same all throughout I would say it would normally have a picture which deals with what they are talking about with a white box that has a written fact about the show ‘the office’. From how it is displayed I would say what characterizes this site to be unique would be how they are able to find these facts that many of us don’t have the time to do or bother to do so, and giving it to us and just interact on how this fact was rather interesting or something that many would have different opinions on. There are no ads, every post is pure fun facts from the show, filled with pictures and texts written on it. The account has 36.5k followers and they uploaded 888 posts and tend to post almost every week.
People who look at the post would like the picture and move on, or others who like and comment on the post, basically having different ways in which they interact with the posts, there are some that would get more attention than others but there will always be people who would at least like the post. Because this account is on Instagram in a way it can be noticeable who the person is based on their profile pictures and you can even check their accounts and maybe their bios can say a lot of who the person is. And sometimes you don’t even have to look specifically at their accounts, you can sometimes tell someone’s age by how they comment on the posts as well as how their mood is towards a certain fun fact they see on this account. Some people also respond to other people’s comments if they seem like they can pitch in an opinion on what they said, it can be based on how they agree or disagree with someone’s comment. I wouldn’t say there were much of strange behaviors cause I do know that there are other fan accounts or just accounts that deal with memes, a show, a celebrity no matter the case where people try to promote their accounts or just say random things when they don’t correlate to the actual post but from what I saw in the account I’m looking at there was none of that so far.
I wouldn’t say this is strange more so interesting how they continue to find these facts but then again there are 8 years worth of content that have a lot of behind the scenes to it, what the directors were thinking of changing last minute, what the actors thought about some stuff and what they did to contribute the show more than just acting in it. Therefore it is interesting how much research they might have to do to tell us these fun facts. I would say other than telling us, about the show when it comes to the creator of the account asking the audience about their opinions we see how the society that has watched this show thinks about the things that were done, whether they believe something was done right or wrong, how they feel about certain characters and why. Because this show was more of a comedy one and there are different things in which people find funny or not, which obviously gives us the idea if the show is funny or not in the end for everyone based on what they say.
Do people look at these posts as a way to know more about the show or more so to give their opinions on certain parts of the show?
what are the common types of random facts that engage the audience to like, comment, and share the posts?
