In this article the author talks about the role of social media in ones life. She goes on to talk about how though the intended functions of social media apps are useful and helpful, that it is actually is damaging to our self image. Because we are constantly active in viewing other peoples accounts, we tend to compare our lives to the lives of others on social media. Thus, the effect is a decrease in our self-esteem.
Source 2: “Is Social media bad for mental health and wellbeing? Exploring the perspectives of adolescents”
In this journal, the authors explore the effects of social media on the mental health of adolescents. Through their research they find themes along the lines of: adolescents perceiving social media as a threat to mental wellbeing, social media causes mood and anxiety disorders, social media is a platform for cyberbullying, and the use of social media is an “addiction”. Their work mainly consists of empirical research on how adolescents perceive social media, and how they think of social media on a wider scope.
Source 3: The Effects of Social Media on Adolescent Health and Well-Being
This journal studies the relationship between social media and adolescent health. Their research also states that there has been an increase in depression and anxiety. Through their studies, they also found that those who spent more time and actively posted on social media reported greater frequency of jealousy and comparing their life to others on social media.
