5 Ways to Celebrate Summer

Happy first day of August!  We have less than one month until the Fall 2017 semester begins.  Start the countdown…

In the interest of celebrating the (almost) month of summer break we have left, here are 5 ways to get out of the air conditioning and enjoy the outdoors.

1) Go to the beach – Coney Island and Rockaway Beach are both great destinations if you want to relax by the water.  Take this opportunity to build a sand castle, walk the boardwalk, order some fresh seafood, and lounge in the sun.

2) Go on a hike – If you’re feeling adventurous, New York has numerous hiking trails easily accessible by public transportation.  Inwood Hill Park and the Greenbelt in Staten Island are great options for getting your hike on.  Get your boots and go!

3) Have a picnic at the park – Spread out a blanket, munch on sandwiches, and treat yourself to an ice cream.  If you’re in a more active mood, places like Central Park, Prospect Park, or Roosevelt Island are easily accessible and great for running and have great views.

4) See a free outdoor show – Every week during the summer, parks around the city offer free summer concerts to match any music tastes.  Grab a friend and enjoy the tunes!

5) Board a boat – If you want to see the city from a different angle, try one of the countless boat tours available around the city.  Or, if you’d prefer a cheaper option, the Staten Island ferry is free and offers great views of the Statue of Liberty.

We hope you’re inspired to get outside and enjoy all summer has to offer!

Graduate Online Certificate in Real Estate Finance

We’re taking a quick break from our regularly scheduled posting to remind you about the upcoming deadline to apply for the graduate online Certificate in Real Estate Finance.

This certificate, offered by our related Steven L. The deadline to apply is Friday, August 4.

Summer in the City

It’s the middle of summer, and the people are melting.  Luckily, while not everyone loves the heat, there are still a few perks to being in New York during this season (an 8:30 pm sunset is just one of these things).

If you’re around the Baruch College campus for work or summer classes and have a little extra time, consider exploring what the area has to offer:

  1. Eat – 23rd Street has a row of fast casual restaurants serving an array of foods from gyros to Buddha bowls to a classic greasy burger and fries. If you walk up Lexington Avenue from the Baruch campus, you’ll also see the rows of restaurants and grocery shops that make up Little India.  Craving caffeine instead? Step outside and you’ll trip over a dozen cafes.  Just take your pick!
  2. Union Square – This iconic square has food, shopping, and an incredible farmers market that comes together four times a week. During the summer, you can usually find free fitness classes, live music, walking tours, and even movie nights.
  3. Madison Square Park – Take a few minutes to enjoy the ever-changing art installations and the meticulously planted flowers and foliage. Afterwards, treat yourself to a heat-busting milkshake from the original Shake Shack location.
  4. Shopping – Walk a couple avenues over to 5th and 6th Avenues and you’ll encounter block after block of shops. Whether you’re on a budget or a shopping spree, this area is great for whiling away some free time.  Plus, they have air conditioning.
  5. Newman Library – Need a break from the excitement and the sun? Baruch College’s Newman Library is open during the summer most days from 7 am-midnight.

We hope you’ve been enjoying your summer, and we look forward to welcoming our students when the Fall semester begins!

Happy Fourth of July!

Today we commemorate our country’s independence.  To many, this means continuing such hallowed traditions as: celebrating with friends and family, barbecuing, donning patriotic colors, and heading to the nearest body of water to watch the fireworks.  It’s also a time to reflect on our shared past and look forward to the future.  However you are celebrating, we hope you have a safe and wonderful day.

Diversity

New York is a very, very loud city.  Early mornings are punctuated by car horns and the rumbling of street cleanup vehicles.  Construction crews drill and hammer outside office windows in the quest to remake the city’s landscape.  There is the periodic late-night ambulance siren.

Yes, it’s a cacophony.  But there are also those sounds that make it all bearable.  Perhaps it’s the jazz band in the park.  Maybe it’s Sunday-morning birdsong.

One that can get overlooked is the stream of voices, all speaking different languages.  Walk into any subway and you can hear them: conversations in English, Spanish, Russian, Greek, Mandarin, Korean, Tagalog.  8.5 million people share this city.  They come from different places and speak different languages, but they call New York home.  Such diversity is not common, but it is an essential part of New York.

It’s also an essential part of Baruch.  With over 2,000 international students speaking over 130 languages, we’re proud to promote the diversity of our city.  At the Department of Real Estate and at the Newman Real Estate Institute, we also hope to promote more diversity in the real estate industry.  When people from different backgrounds work together, they can also prosper together.

Expansion

Quite a lot of things in life are about expansion.  Businesses expand to keep pace with success.  The population expands.  On a really macro level, the universe is expanding all the time.

At the Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute at Baruch College, we’re doing some expansion too.  We recently unveiled a new online certificate in real estate finance, with an eye to providing learning opportunities that weren’t there before.  The classes are at the graduate level, so they are good for people who already have some experience in, if not real estate, then the business world.  All four certificate classes are also conducted online; you can do your learning at home in your pajamas (or at a coffee shop in your pajamas – we don’t judge).

We’re already accepting applications for this Fall.  Won’t you join us?

Welcome!
