U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan appointed Alejandra Ceja (MPA) executive director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. Prior to this, she served as chief of staff for Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter. Michael Kawochka (MBA) joined Warren Lewis Sotheby’s International Realty in Brooklyn last spring as a licensed real estate agent. Previously he worked at Pfizer and Edelman PR Worldwide. Kawochka serves on the Greenpoint YMCA Board of Managers and is a member of the New York Technology Council. Christina Latouf (MBA) was promoted to the newly-created position of VP for communications, external relations, and economic development at Baruch College. She had been an assistant VP and member of the President’s Cabinet at her alma mater since 2008. Kevin Martin has been appointed director of engineering services in the property management department of Swig Equities. He was formerly chief engineer and assistant building manager for Jack Rednick & Sons at 485 Madison Avenue. Marcin Urbaszek has been appointed managing director of Two Harbors Investment Corporation. He was previously a director in the Financial Institutions Group at Credit Suisse.

Florian Bita has joined Cantor Fitzgerald as managing director, focusing on U.S. CLO secondary trading. He recently served as head of CLO and structured products trading at UBS. Fred Leon has been named senior account executive at Pure Minutes, a prepaid international long-distance calling company. He was most recently East Coast sales account manager at Vivaro Corp. Last spring Miriam Sy-Gorski opened Au Gourmet Café at 126 Nassau Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, along with her partner Juan Reyes. Sy-Gorski, who lives in the neighborhood, also works at Sovereign Bank.

Michelle Cheney Donaldson (MPA) was selected as a short-list candidate for the 2014 Ian Axford (New Zealand) Fellowship.

Daniel Nelson (MBA) is an assistant professor at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Maryland. His research focuses on several proteins derived from bacteriophage that possess inherent antimicrobial potential. Ayris T. Scales (MPA) has been the executive director of the DC Promise Neighborhood Initiative (DCPNI) since April 2012. She previously served as interim executive director of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

In April Amir Elbaz (MBA) was appointed CEO of MobileSmith, a mobile app development platform. He has been chairman of the board of directors since November 2012. Ben Shuldiner (MSEd) was appointed Distinguished Lecturer of Education Leadership at Hunter College.

Warren E. Haynes (MSEd) is an assistant professor in the School of Pubic Administration, Social Work, and Criminal Justice at Kentucky State University. He earned his Doctor of Public Administration degree at the University of Baltimore.

Lena Bakis is a manager in Ernst & Young’s Financial Accounting Advisory Services group based in New York. In her current role, she is responsible for serving clients on technical accounting matters. Bakis participates in Baruch’s Executives on Campus Mentor for a Morning (M4M) program. Anusree Nair has joined the immigration law firm of Klasko, Rulon, Stock & Seltzer LLP as an associate, focusing on both employment- and family-based immigration.

In February Teesha S. Bhola was promoted to VP, treasury services–client research, at J.P. Morgan. She is part of Baruch’s recruiting team for the company’s Corporate Development Program. Kerry Coddett is the creator of the Coddett Project, a sketch comedy web series that delivers social commentary along with humor. La-Asia Hundley (MBA) is the recipient of Con Edison’s Living Our Values Award, presented to employees who exemplify the values of service, teamwork, excellence, and concern for their community. Hundley, who joined Con Ed in 2001, is a labor and wage development manager in the company’s human resources department. Jocelyn Muhleisen, Baruch’s first Fulbright-winning student, returned to the College as a substitute instructor in the School of Public Affairs this fall. Former varsity Bearcat Clarence Emengo (’07) has been named head coach of the Queensborough Community College men’s basketball team.

Phil Schatz graduated from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in spring 2013. He is completing his residency at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn. Schatz, a member of the men’s basketball squad during his time at Baruch, holds the record as tallest player—6 foot, 9 inches—in College history.

Jana Kasperkevic covers start-ups, small businesses, and entrepreneurship for Inc. Her work has appeared in the Village Voice, InvestmentNews, Business Insider, and the Houston Chronicle, among others. She lives in Brooklyn. Troy Willitt (XMPA), house counsel at the Association of Public Health Laboratories, recently returned from Mozambique to help with APHL’s efforts to create a national public health laboratory training network.
