In the comic Artie’s father Halvet always compared his daily life to his experience in the Holocaust. Art knows that this tragic incident has affected his father’s life and will continue to as his own life as he lives. As we see in the introduction of chapter one, Art tells his father about how he fell off his skateboard and how his friends continued skating without any care to assist him. He used his experience in the Holocaust to automatically guide Art. Usually as a parent they are known to comfort their child in grief. We can certainly see the effect of such a devastation on his father’s life creates an impact on his owns life. We can see a transition when we compare Vladek persona after the Holocaust to before the Holocaust. The relationship with his second wife Mala is very strained with love being lost. Artie’s father is no longer handsome, charming, caring, compassionate, and calm compared to when he was filled with love for Anaja.
