During the interview, my mom and I had a talk about what’s most important to her that she brought over from Africa. The two things that stood out the most were their clothes and her ring. I asked her why these two things held such significance, and she explained that it’s because these possessions define their identity. Her clothes allow them to express themselves and showcase their fashion, highlighting the vibrant patterns from Africa. The ring, on the other hand, is a cherished gift from her mother and a tradition passed down through generations. Their own mother had given them a piece of jewelry at a young age, with the hope that they would keep it throughout their life. Now, they’re passing this tradition on to me and my sisters.

Learning about this tradition in our family was a shocking surprise. When my mom wears her African clothes, it inspires us to wear ours as well, each in our unique style, with our creative choices in colors and patterns. It’s a way for us to honor our history and continue these traditions into the future for our own children and the generations that follow.

During our interview, I aimed to create a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere. We shared jokes and lighthearted moments while still discussing meaningful topics. We delved into the past and explored the significance of these artifacts. The questions I asked made my mom happy because i was interested in getting to know her better. The conversation was both fun and meaningful, creating a connection between us.

I hope the listeners or viewers take away the fact that my mom is most comfortable speaking in their native tongue. Since she came to a new country, it has been challenging for her to engage in conversations with people who don’t speak her language. However, they’re a passionate and humorous person who loves making jokes, even if we claim we are “hurt” , all in good fun, of course. This interview reveals the importance of cultural and linguistic connections and the love that binds us as a family. It’s a testament to the significance of preserving and celebrating cultural heritage within the family and is a beautiful reflection of the value of traditions that continue through generations.
