Chapter 3

Hugh says, “Isn’t it the most blissful thing in the world to be away from everything you have ever known – to be so far away that you don’t even know yourself anymore and you’re not sure you ever want to come back to all the things you’re a part of?” (“LUCY – JAMAICA KINCAID – Survey of Caribbean Literature in English”)

The quote allows the reader to gain a better understanding of human strength, survival, resilience, and a sense of longing, reflecting on environmental, biological, and cultural factors that influence human behavior. A common factor that mirrors this quote is colonialism and repeating curses that led Caribbean people to have the difficulties to define self-identity, individuality, and psyche which shapes human belief at its core. I agree with this quote and its reality of human suffering, a struggle for survival, and a family divided.

As I read this quote it speaks volumes about the colonial era, and how parenting styles have evolved as a mechanism to ensure future generations a way adapt to a reality far more sinister than the bubble we create and tend to live in.

Overall, the way it shaped her experiences, ideas, and values is in a quote the Jamaica Kincaid said in the “gospel of Lucy” podcast.

“No one is ignorant naturally, but if it benefits you, you will continue to do ignorant things especially if it brings you fortune”

Kincaid’s experiences of tough love and honesty shaped the person she is today as she speaks confidently of the experiences she had as a child and the person she is today. “Lucy” is a beautifully written novel that will be read and studied throughout history, inspiring many readers to the world of a character named “Lucy.”

  1. Hi Leticia. I really enjoy this perspective on the quote. I hadn’t considered that it might be speaking to human survival. It’s interesting to think about wanting to forget a past and being far from home as a coping mechanism or a form of survival.
