NO! Being a Breadwinning Women Does Not Ruin Your Relationship
An interesting article in NPR, says “38% of American wives earn more than their husbands”. Traditionally, men have been the breadwinners. Working long hours, traveling frequently, and moving up the corporate ladder, but today things have changed. In some cases, the women has become the provider, which is an amazing thing, until it destroys your marriage. That won’t happen. The best thing to do is to understand your spousal situation is different from everyone else’s and doesn’t need to be the same. Understanding this, helps you to create your own rules and order in your relationship.
- Challenge the norm, create balance through open communication and teamwork. Instead of always using the pronoun “I”, remember to use “We” when discussing financial payments or decisions.
- Have equal amounts of workload. Just because your spouse stays at home, it doesn’t mean he or she is not burdened by day to day tasks. Also, view the type of work as equal. This is easier said then done, but it is important to not devalue washing dishes or picking up the kids from school as easy or simple. Creating equality of work helps the relationship stay stable, ultimately removing guilt.
- Create realistic needs. With the women out at work, needs fall short. Your spouse begins to see you less and the type of conversations you guys have may begin to change. Allow your spouse to express his or her needs. This is where compromise comes in. A benefit to this, is it allows your marriage to have downtime. Schedule monthly dinners, breakfast together before work, less work calls at home, etc. Again, these are compromises that have to fit the need of you and your spouse.
- Create a reward system. This should be implemented to all marriages, but because you both work differntly to create stability in the household. It is important for both spouses to reward each other for their work.
