The Film: Rashomon

  1. The film Rashomon was focused on murder with four different stories of how it happened. Throughout the film, we are given flashbacks and memories of each individual’s encounter with the murder.
  2. The main symbols that are represented in the film are the moments where each person is questioned regarding their perspective towards the situation.
  3. The most important idea that I noticed is who is to be trusted. Gender has become irrelevant and certain people’s words have no creditability towards the truth. It will always remain relevant because lying and telling the truth will remain in human nature.
  4. Throughout the order of each person’s account of the murder, it becomes closer to the actual death of the person. It begins from a distant sound towards being with the person at the time of the death. As we get closer to the end of the film we see more flashbacks of how the man recalled the death of the man.
  5. I think the man that talked about everyone lying was telling the truth. He had no gain or loss if he did lie, unlike the man and woman that were involved more with the death. Unlike the others, I believed he was telling the closest thing to the truth.
  6. I believe with this gesture the priest at the end believed that the man was telling the honest truth and he had good intentions. When they brought up the baby he mentioned his six other kids saying it wouldn’t be any more difficult to take care of another kid.
  7. The adaption of the short story was captured very precisely in my opinion because of the facial expressions that each actor displayed. When the accounts of each person were shown in the film it gave us more to go off of unlike if it was on a page with less description. If this film was to be remade in the present date I believe it could improve certain quality but the quality of the film didn’t diminish or hold back the story at all.
