Man of Steel Review

The article I have chosen to do is a review on the recent Superman reboot Man of Steel. The article suggests that the first 100 minutes of the film is(mainly the middle) is perfectly done. It also suggests the last 45 minutes(the ending) is a pointless, poorly done battle that just shows off special effects. I could not disagree more. In my opinion, the middle of the movie is very boring. The beginning and end are intense, action packed minutes. I especially liked the beginning. In the beginning, this movie went where no Superman movie has gone before. It showed Jor-El(Supermans biological father) in a battle with General Zod. No Superman movie has ever showed Jor- El in action. I also liked the special effects towards the end. The fact is, movies need special effects these days, and I believe this movie excels in this. Despite the positives of this movie, is has its negative parts. First of all, the middle was boring. Secondly, Zod does not say his catch phrase, “Kneel before Zod.” I mean, are you kidding me? That catch phrase made Zod the legendary villain he is today. Lastly, and most importantly, I felt as though the casting for this movie was horrendous. Henry Cavill does a great job playing superman(while wearing the suit), but played a weak Clark Kent. Amy Adams plays a terrible Lois Lane. Not only is her hair the wrong color, but she portrays Lois lane as a weak, dependent damsel in distress. Through superhero history, Lois Lane is the one girlfriend of a superhero that can actually take care of herself, and Amy Adams did not display this. Michael Shannon(General Zod) was plain and simply too young to play General Zod. Zod is supposed to be significantly older(about 30 years) then Superman, and Michael Shannon is only 9 years older than Henry Cavill. Lastly, I hated the way that the story of Superman was modified. Some things just should not be changed, this being one of them. Lois Lane discovers Supermans identity before she even meets Clark Kent, they slightly modify Supermans suit, and SUPERMAN KILLS ZOD. Zack Snyder(director) are you kidding me? Regardless of the situation, Superman always finds a way to fix it without killing someone. Overall, this movie had many things going for it, however, messed up… a lot. However, I feel as though the parts the article praised were poorly done, and the parts the article put down were well done.

‘Gravity’ Number One in Box Office

Warner Brothers film Gravity directed Alfonso Cuarón hauls in $55.6 million domestic another $27.4 million in internationally. The 3-D Science Fiction thriller stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney). But when they reach space disaster hits the space shuttle is destroyed from High-speed debris and they are both completely alone in space. My rating of the film was 10/10 stars because it was very original .No one has ever thought of the idea of being stuck in space and it actual terrify me knowing no one could hear you. The 3-D in the movie was great everything looked so real.

The other movies that were out this weekend were “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2” which was second for the weekend, with about $21.5 million in domestic ticket sales, while “Runner Runner,” was a distant third, with about $7.6 million in domestic sales

Freshman Welcome Barbeque!

The first event i attended at Baruch was the freshman barbeque. I was very optimistic about coming to Baruch and the barbeque was a great start to the year. I got to see the different cultures of the school and meet a lot of new people. The school was very welcoming and made me feel confident about the transition from high school to college. At the barbeque, there were many tables with different clubs at each table. I was shocked at the number of clubs Baruch had to offer. Aside from the different clubs i got to see, i also enjoyed the food. Overall , the barbeque was extremely informative and enjoyable. It put me in good spirit about what my journey will be like at Baruch for the next four years. get-attachment.aspx

‘PRISONERS’ Review

The New Film ‘Prisoners’ Starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal takes peoples perception of evil and twists it in a scary new way. One iconic line from the film i noticed when i saw it was “He is not a person anymore.” This film is about the abduction of two young girls and a father will to do absolutely anything to get them back. My rating of this movie is 5/5 stars. The acting was incredible from all aspects from the deranged father to the shell of a mother, to the psychotic suspects throughout the film. Hugh Jackman plays Keller Dover who kidnaps the suspect in the abduction of his daughter and torutures him for days with no legitimate proof of his guilt. The reason why this movie impacts its audience is it gives us several other suspects to make us question our judgement on who the criminal really is, this doubt turns this caring father into a person who sanity is questioned as the movie continues. Gyllenhaal also gives a stellar performance as a dark detective, intent on finding these girls while also digging his own hole of depression when he continues to come up short. The whole movie takes place in about 1 week, but its content makes it seems like months. With a gripping ending Prisoners will be and easy must have DVD and probably will be nominated for some awards for best actor and best supporting actor. With its insane twist and constant self questioning in the minds of the audience Evil has a new name, its called Abduction.

“Prisoners” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). Graphic violence and profanity.

Ben Affleck has shockingly been cast to play Batman in the upcoming 2015 blockbuster film, “The Man of Steel 2”. According to the article, the director of The Man of Steel, Zack Znyder, Affleck has “the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter”. In additional to casting Affleck, any rumors of the former Caped Crusader, Christian Bale, getting paid 50 million dollars to once again fight crime have been proven false. This news upsets many. Many feel as though Christian Bale is the only modern day Batman and must reprise his role. I have a view somewhere in the middle. While I wish Christian Bale would once more put on the cape and fight side by side Superman for the first time, the fact is, Christian Bale does not want to play Batman again. And while Ben Affleck may be no Christian Bale, he at least has the dark, masculine traits of Bruce Wayne, while other rumored potential Batmans, such as Ryan Gosling, are just untalented pretty boys that would have unquestionably played Batman Horribly. While I am not necessarily against the casting choice, I am not for it either. Ben Affleck is 41 years old. By the time the movie comes out, he will be 43 years old, which means if he were to be in a second or third, he would be close to fifty. He might be a bit too old to play Batman. Also, being a so called “Seasoned crime fighter”, you would think he would have been mentioned in the first Man of Steel, right? Nope.  No mention of him, yet, all of a sudden, there is a seasoned, 40 year old vigilante running around. Ultimately, while I am not crazy about this hiring, I feel as though Zack Snyder did the best he could considering Christian Bale was unwilling to return. Hopefully, Man of Steel 2 is a hit and Ben Affleck adds to the legacy of the Batman.

New York Film Festival 2013

images        In a recent New York Times article , “Still Meaty, Film Festival Lightens Up” , written by Stephen Holden, discusses the New York Film Festival this year. Holden mentions how there have been a series of complaints over the years about the movies shown at the festival. Attendees of the film festival felt that there were not enough movies in the entertainment category. In its fifty first year , the New York Film Festival decided to make a few changes. Holden references movies such as Ben Stiller’s recent film “The Secret of Walter Mitty” , Richard Curitis’s  “About Time”, and Corneliu Porumboiu’s “ When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism”. “The Secret of Walter Mitty”  is about a photo editor who works for Life Magazine and is on a mission to locate a missing still.  “About Time” is a British comedy which tells the story of a father and his son who have the ability to time travel. “ When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism” is a unique story about how a relationship is similar to filming. All three of these films are very different which serves the purpose of this years film festival to include a variety of new genres . The variety of films attracts to more than one audience and successfully acknowledges the complaints of many viewers in the past years.
