I must admit that food that was supplied by our tour guide company was fairly decent. Most of the local companies that offer guides up Kilimanjaro will serve similar dishes. Every company that you use will bring along a cook for the trip to prepare your meals. Breakfast usually consists of cereal, oatmeal and sometimes eggs and fruit. You will be given fresh water at the start and end of every day. Lunch will consist of a sandwich, a banana and a chocolate bar. Dinner will almost always begin with a warm soup (it starts to get very cold the higher you ascent), and main course will be chicken most of the time with a couple side dishes. Granted you and ravenous at the end of a 10 hour hike and will devour anything put in front of you, but I was very impressed with the quality of the meals. That being said, I would highly suggest bringing along ‘comfort food’. My definition of comfort food are snacks that you usually enjoy at home. Chocolate bars and candy can be a welcome snack at the end of the day as you stare up at the stars. Other supplements I highly suggest are power bars, energy bars, caffeine bars and protein bars. Besides being a snack along the way, they taste great and provide you with energy, fiber and calories that are lost during your hike. They also provide comfort and familiarity while undertaking this venture. Another good item to bring along is water purification tabs. Most of the water provided is boiled to remove impurities. There are however many streams along the way that you can use to fill your water bottles with. Having these tabs are easy and convenient to ensure that the water is safe to drink. If you get any water born illnesses that cause diarrhea, you trip is over, period. Having this supplements will not only fuel you on your hike, but also be a welcome comfort food that you will really enjoy.
