Persuasive Speech Reflection- Will Ng

After watching my persuasive speech video, I was able to analyze my speech in my physical and vocal delivery. The delivery was similar in my past videos. I would follow my speech with an introduction with a loud voice, but stiff body. The tone and volume would remain loud, but I was worried that I couldn’t enunciate my words properly. I think my rate in speech was normal without any pacing. I noticed the rate and volume remained stagnant throughout my speeches, but my habit of staying stiff never changed. Also, I believe it might be difficult for my audience to hear my words due to my enunciation of my words, which may make it difficult for my audience to hear my speech. I think I was about 50% and above in my persuasive speech in winning over my audience. After reading my speech review slips, a majority circled a 5 meaning that they were persuaded. A persuasive speech is a speech where a person can make powerful evidence in logic, strong emotions when speaking, and establishes strong credibility in their argument. I was able to witness this throughout my classmate’s speeches. I can witness myself using these communication skills in my future occupations. I would be able to perform stronger business deals, create better connections, and make new colleagues with my communication skills. The overall most important skill that I was able to take away was confidence. I never was too sure if I could speak in front of an audience until this class. This was my best achievement gained through the course.

Informative Speech Reflection

In my presentation, I believe my group was organized and delivered a unified presentation. We would have a good chronological order explaining our individual topics while providing good transitions from each one. The unification is from the order and the transitions between the topics. I believe I could have changed mine a little by expanding my topic a little more. I could have explained more history within the times of the segregation unit. The only improvement in cohesiveness that my group could had changed was adding more stronger transitions. I used the visual aids effectively in each of my slides explaining the change. The most effective moment would be when I mentioned the beginning before the image while leading up to the visual aid. The moment that I believe that I could have improved was when I involved class involvement in my visual aid. During my speech, my physical and vocal delivery was different compared to my previous presentations. I was swaying more than usual, but I believe my eye contact was applicable. My vocal delivery could had improved in the tone and loudness through the room. I would put more confidence in my words while keeping a strong physical stance. Now, other presentations in class kept me entertained by their way of speaking. For instance, they would have some humor plus distinctive facts that relate to modern day history. Well, these facts personally keep me entertained since I could relate the understanding in humor. Overall, the qualities had to be the verbal delivery in tone while having the best physical posture.

Personal Speech Reflection

Will Ng

I preferably enjoy presenting a speech that’s either memorized or spoken truly from my mind. When I had speech cards, it just made my speech seem more difficult to express since I felt I had to follow a written script in my hand in order to talk. My experience with a memorized script from my hand helps give me the ability to freely talk my mind without having to think that I may had forgotten something, then I would look down at my note cards. I believe my note cards were my biggest downfall during my personal speech. After watching my own video, I was able to notice the many blunders that I made. For instance, I noticed how I hesitated with words because I stuttered when trying to express my thoughts. It just became jumbled up in my mind since I was overwhelmed by the amount of information on my note cards. If I was able to freely just talk without anything in my hands, I believe I would have easily spoken anything from my mind. I was satisfied with my loud voice and serious attitude, which established credibility in my experience. I can understand why some people can’t understand me at certain times since I may jumble up on my words. From my classmates, everyone did well in utilizing their voice in language since their speeches drew me in. I was able to understand how taking certain pauses, speaking in different tones, and having great posture can help make a story very engaging. These three qualities helped a lot in making myself engaged when listening to their personal speeches. The qualities that wouldn’t keep me engaged would be a story that may be too long with unnecessary details or a story that is spoken horribly. A story spoken horribly could be a story with a mumbling voice or taking long pauses in the stories because the speaker forgot what to say. My image helps my point because speaking from your mind gives one better expression in their words rather than having long scripted words.

Obama’s Announcement

Barack Obama’s announcement about the death of Osama Bin Laden conveys a powerful message towards every citizen of the US. His speech was not intended for a specific person or group, but to every citizen whose lives have been affected by Osama Bin Laden. Obama’s main message was to notify his people as president of the US that one of their main enemies shall no longer be a threat. As a fellow citizen who listened to this speech, I believe our country can be a better and safer environment for its people and for those support it.

Throughout the beginning and the ending of Obama’s speech, all the words utilized were spoken with a strong tone and a powerful voice. The impact lies within Obama’s voice and usage in syntax because it allows the people of this country to be persuaded into trusting and following one individual into becoming their leader. Obviously, the main impact of his message is notifying the US to no longer be threatened by Al Qaeda’s work with the death of its leader. I know I can not speak for every citizen of the US to witness if the country has become a safer place from hearing Obama’s announcement; however the day after Obama’s announcement, many students of my high school were spreading word of how relieved they felt knowing the man responsible of 9/11 was finally dead. Additionally, Obama’s last words in his announcement “took custody of his body” demonstrates how there is true evidence of his death. Just Obama’s words are enough to tell the US that another event like 9/11 will not occur anytime soon.
