Baboo-copter is a quiet and shy cartoon character. When she speak in front of people, she is very nervous. Her hands holds her outline without any gesture. Sometimes she fidgets with her hands during her presentation. She reads entirely from notes, and doesn’t speak extemporaneously or make eye contact with the audience. There have some obvious change since she taking this course. She not always reads from the notes, and she makes some eye contact. She trys to keep her hands still at her sides. She becomes more comfortable speak in front of people, but it comes with a lot of practice.

I think the most important things to public speaker are effective delivery and use visual aid, Such as having confidence, maintain eye contact, and use natural gesture. Firstly, speakers should have knowledge about their topic. They should prepare well for the presentation. They could show their enthusiasm to the audience. Having confidence can help the speakers to convey a message or convince audience. Then the speaks maintain eye contact with the audience can let them know they are recognized. Gestures are a natural and ubiquitous way to convey meaning in communication. A natural gesture will gets audience’s attention and helps speakers express their emotion. On the contrary, speaks fidgeting around would distract audience attention.

One thing surprise me is I have stronger volume when I present my speech. I used to be afraid to speak in the crowd and then I speak in a quiet voice. So the audience couldn’t hear what I said. One thing I learn how to start my speech draft from this course. Such as using some questions, story or quota to get audience’s attention; using vocal citation to avoid plagiarism; and using expert testimony and personal experience to support your idea. I can use this writing skill for other course. Another thing would be effective delivery. It’s helpful for my other course. (Jinjin Xu)

written-vs-verbal-communication  Jinjin Xu

This caricature compares a person two situations. One is she types her written communication on her computer. She writes, “And, thus, I can conclude that my hypothesis was indeed correct.” She uses a word “thus,” it is very clear, and it’s transitioning to the conclusion. When she finished her speech draft, she drinks a cup of coffee and feels relaxed. Another is when she presents her verbal speech in front of the audience, she was all of a sweat. She is so nerves, therefore, she stumbled through her verbal speech.

I can tell by her face that she is so nerves. She was glassy, expressionless and immobile. Her speech is full of vocal fillers. For example, she said ” An so. Um. Like. Well so yeah it’s like, you know.” Her hands holds her outline without any gesture. She reads entirely from notes, and doesn’t speak extemporaneously or make eye contact with the audience.

This caricature reflect on my personal speech. I seem like this caricature’s protagonist, I was finished my speech draft, and practised a lot. However, Halfway through my speech, I forgot the rest of what I wanted to say. Sometimes my voice was utterly and drearily expressionless. Both the protagonist of the caricature and I were holding the outline during the presentation. We should be more relaxed and try to use physical gestures to expressing the depth of an emotion. Making eye contact is very importance. We should make sure that we are talking to the whole audience. I had rattle through my speech. I should slow down and try to make some pauses. When I watch the vocat, I realized I said “hmm” so many times. I should use pauses instead of using undesirable vocal fillers. All in all, we need to be confidence when we delivered the speeches. In addition, we need to do a lot of practice, it may not build our confidence but it will reduce anxiety.

Bamboo-copter is a shy and quiet cartoon character. Taking Com1010 is the most challenging thing for her. She only has once experience with public speaking. Last semester she took Eng2150. She presented her presentation in front of the class. Although it is a small class only have nine people, she stills nerves. Nervousness is a major problem for many people during public speaking. A visual aid is really help the presentation. She made a Power Point slides for her presentation. Sometimes she forgets the content, the Power Point will remind her the main points. She enjoys a process from choosing an article, doing research, and presenting a speech that are interesting. She had done a presentation. She hopes she will do better than first time. She hopes through this course will improve her communication, research and analyse skills.
She always pays attention to the class, and takes a note. However, she doesn’t speak a lot. Sometimes she forces herself to join the class discussion, but she only can say few words. A small group discussion made her feels more comfortable.
Because she lacks of vocabularies, sometimes she can’t express what her idea is. She will use body language or she will give some examples. A strength of her presentation is the Q&A time. She does a lot of research. So she is able to answer the questions and has a discussion with the audiences. In order to build her confident, she will practise a lot before she presents her speech. Another strength is she has well organize. She will follow the plan. The worse thing is she doesn’t know how to engage the audiences. She speaks too fast because she is so nerves. Sometimes audiences don’t understand what she saying. She believe only thing can overcome nervousness is a practice.
