Epic of Gilgamesh

 

       

        The Epic of Gilgamesh is a great epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia, and it is one of the earliest pieces of world literature. The story talks about the main character, Gilgamesh, who was thought to be a priest king of the city-state of Uruk in Southern Mesopotamia. He is two-thirds god and one-third human. his virtues and his flaws are outsized.  He also has good-like in body. Gilgamesh built magnificent ziggurats, or temple towers which surrounded his city with high wall.

        In Table 1, the story introduces Gilgamesh is the son of a goddess and a mortal king, Ninsun and Lugalbanda, he is terrifying. And he is powerful and stronger than all the people in the village, and none of the women were safe from him and all men were his slaves. The old men of Uruk complain, saying that a king is supposed to protect his subjects like a shepherd, not harass them like a wild ox. Therefore, gods create a man, who name is Enkidu that equal to Gilgamesh and he will be able to stop Gilgamesh’s oppression. He is placed in the forest where he annoys a trapper by taking the animals from his traps. The trapper tells the sun-god Shamash about the man, and it is arranged for Enkidu to be seduced by Shamhat, they have been together for six days and seven nights. After that, Enkidu comes back to the animals, but the animals reject him because he is no longer one of them, and he is part of the human world.

        Table 2-4 introduces Enkidu starts living with Shamhat, and she teaches Enkudu how to be a human and become more civilized. Afterward, Enkidu realizes that he wants a friend. Later in a coincidence of opportunity, Enkidu meets Gilgamesh in a wedding ceremony in Uruk. Enkidu is angry about Gilgamesh’s treatment of new brides, so they fight. Gilgamesh wins, but they meet each other, and then they become good friends. They decided to go to Cedar Forest to Kill Humbaba. Before they go, Gilgamesh comes to visit his mother who is the goddess Ninsun, to watch over him. Ninsun does this, and also makes Enkidu as her son.

        On the journey to the Cedar Forest, Gilgamesh has many nightmares. Enkidu thinks these dreams all symbolism of their win over Humbaba. However, when they arrive at the Cedar Forest, Gilgamesh is afraid to continue because they hear Humbaba bellowing. But they have to hurry and keep going. They encourage each other that as long as they work together, they will win Humbaba.
