Our Trojan War Reaction

Our Trojan War is a play that questions democracy from a war point of view. Greek mythology was a big theme is this play. There were many characters used in Our Trojan War from Greek mythology stories. I felt like that theme made the story easier to understand and more interesting because I was familiar with the character, their history, and family line. For example the I’m aware of the story of Achilles. Achilles was in the battle of the Trojan war and he was known to be one of the best and well known fighters which was shown in the play. The stories told in this play were translated from stories by writers such as Homer, Plato, and Virgil. Some of these writers we speak about in class. I was able to make other connection to this play with other stories we read in class. One connection I can make is Our Trojan War is a story that has multiple stories. One Thousand and One Nights and The Canterbury Tales are frame stories as well. Another connection I can make is with Ovid’s Metamorphoses. There is a scene in the play where soldiers are turned into pigs. This is similar to The Metamorphoses because characters in The Metamorphoses are turned into animals as well. When these Soldiers are on a mission they come across as sacred book. In this book they realize how important this ancient text is to society. It makes them question their actions to their call of duty. It was confusing to me that these soldiers were so well equipped to be in the setting of ancient times. They had big guns and camouflage Amour. These actors also changed roles so quickly without changing wardrobe. They also changed from a character in the story to a narrator quickly. Which also confused me but I was still able to keep up with the story. At the end of the play there were speeches were actors connected the play to the history in the united states. These speeches included well known famous people such as presidents and some of the biggest leaders of the country. This stuck out to me because it proved the point of the story they were trying to make. Over all I had a good time and I’m glad I was able to experience another play where I was able to learn something and go home with knowledge.
