Linkedin Workshop

Recently I attended a Starr workshop, which showed me how to use LinkedIn. LinkedIn is an online way of advertising yourself to potential employers. It’s somewhat like a resume, but its way of communicating is a more informal approach to recruitment. In a resume you’d include your qualifications and your experience, just listing out what you can do. On LinkedIn, as it was explained to me you simply highlight your best features which showcase your work experience still, but it also gives a more personable feel to those who view your profile.

The workshop offered a lot of insight on how people use the internet to network. I learned that before the development of this website people would carry around business cards and hand them out if they wanted to get certain aspects across. I like how technology has progressed society out of those days and made things easier for people.  Despite my liking of the concept of LinkedIn, I don’t think I plan on using it anytime soon. The website is designed more for people who know what they would like to and isn’t built for people who are still trying to find their path. Also, If you don’t have any skills or experience in what you’re looking to do, you’ll be considered a joke on it, and there wouldn’t be any real chance of an employer contacting you. So, I’ve decided that until I know for sure what I want to do in the future, and actually get decent work experience I’ll refrain from using the networking site.

West Indian Culture Club

Today I attended a general interest meeting for West Indian Culture club at Baruch. This is probably the first club even I’ve been in full attendance for at any one meeting. I made brief appearances at other clubs before but they only had about ten minutes left before they concluded their meetings. I actually ended up coming to this club really last minute. I was around the school when club hours were about to start, and I saw a friend of mine who told me to come to the G.I.M. To be really honest, my original reason for going was because she told me they had dominoes. I was really hungry so I said sure, I was not about to out miss out on free food.
The club was actually really interesting and fun. My parents are from Haiti so I am part of the West Indian Culture. The club started with the board members introducing themselves, and then they told us we would be playing Kahoot to see how much we know about the culture. The only questions I could answer were the ones about finishing song lyrics and the colors of certain countries’ flags. Playing the game made me realize I knew almost nothing about the Caribbean, and that I’m only connected to it by blood. Despite my defeat in Kahoot, I definitely plan on going to next club meeting because this one was a lot of fun.

Art Gallery

Last week Thursday I took a trip to the Canada Gallery. The Canada Gallery is an art exhibit located on 333 Broome street. The gallery is currently displaying Bernadette Mayer’s exhibit titled “Memory”. Bernadette is more well known for her written works such as her autobiographic work “A Midwinter Day” and “Poetry State Forest”. The fact that she has an Art Exhibit is really interesting to me. Transitioning from written work to art work isn’t easy for many people, because in my opinion I feel like it appeals to different parts of the mind. So to be able to properly transition and still attract a good amount of attention is quite spectacular.

In the summer of 1971 starting on July 1st, Bernadette used a roll of film everyday to capture whatever interested her. The end result was a collection of over a thousand photos; The photos weren’t of anything special, but they were things that just intrigued and appealed to her. The photos were as simple as the railings of a staircase, and the most interesting photo was one captured of the edge of a cliff. I think what really made the photos so appealing was the use of basic photographic principles like the rule of thirds for example.

Overall the exhibit was very interesting and the audio pairing of it helped give me a deeper understanding of the whole situation.
