First-Year Seminar 2017 – DMB

Freshman Seminar 3- Career

For my third and final blog post I decide to go and visit the Staar Career Center in our school to begin to work and finish up my resume that I had once create when I applied for my first job. I started working my first real job last year at a warranty and customer service establishment in Brooklyn, and had to give in a resume. It was my first time making one and I used basic outlines online to help create mine. I decided that I wanted to make mine better because I had this free and easier option right in front of me. When I went to work with an advisor in the office they helped me fix things up that I didn’t have and taught me how to include key things like past jobs and how to get rid of some things that weren’t as important. After this visit I feel like the Staar Career Center is a place I will be visiting frequently because they offer a lot more things that can help me in my future career such as mock interviews for which I will use my resume that I created with the advisor. I like the Career center because they make you feel comfortable when writing your resume and they try to make sure that it is perfect for any job. I also began to add a lot more skills that I have gained through the year onto my resume with the advisors they told me to also add languages I speak, if I know how to use any computer programs, and if I am certified in any program such as Adobe, which I happened to have a certificate in and didn’t add it on my first one. They also told not to add any personal details such as my age and any other information like relationship status etc. I never really knew prior to that it was something you shouldn’t add. Overall I feel like this experience will really help me with future jobs down the line.

Basic Resume we started with and worked on.

Freshman Seminar 2 Student Life-Justin Kushnir

On October 26, I was at the Breast Cancer Awareness event on the second floor.  It was run by the Women in Business club and they were all wearing some form of pink. There was loud music being played by a DJ and there was loads of other activities within the event to do. There was an opportunity to pie the president, buy goods from the bake sale and enter a raffle to win prizes. I like how they were able to create such a joyous and fun event for a good cause and it seemed to be getting attention which means that they raised a lot of money.  They had the bearcat mascot at the front and we were able to take a picture with him which is interesting because it’s really the first time i’ve seen him since my orientation. It’s also the first time I’ve ever seen an event this big and loud in the lobby of the school although we were told about it at convocation, so I found it amazing to see that the club was able to get a live DJ and get allowed by the school to play it that loud.
I got involved by donating a dollar and then entering into the raffle as well to add another dollar in. I would like to continue to get involved in events like these because at the end of the day it is a good cause, that we are getting involved in. If I can ever have the chance I would like to be apart of one of the clubs that throw a big event like that because it seems to bring a lot of the student body together. It’s a good way to get involved in the school student life but not just any club. It’s a club with a good cause involved in it. At the end of the day I feel like this is a good experience for anybody who is just starting out in Baruch because it gives you a perfect taste of the student life.

Academic Blog Post-Justin Kushnir

For my Academic blog, I am writing about my experience at the I Have No Enemies and No Hatred: Contemporary Chinese Dissident Art” exhibit at John Jay College. There was a lot of different art pieces there from a number of Chinese Dissident Artist and learning the meaning of a lot of them left me shocked. I never quite realized how oppressed citizens and China are by their government and how little freedom they have. The exhibition/museum was not crowded and it was very easy for me to get around and see everything that I wanted in a good amount of time. I liked the museum because it was not too big and was not a lot to take in. I was able to check out all the paintings in around 45 minutes.
This activity helped me during my first semester because it taught me to be open to new experiences. Before the day I went, I had only been to an art exhibit one other time and I did not like it, in fact I left after about 15 minutes. This time though it was so easy to take in all the paintings and it was quiet and relaxing for me. It showed me that if you don’t try new things you’ll never know whether or not you would enjoy them. A lesson like that can help me when I’m deciding between joining a club or staying out of it. All I have to do is remember that I didn’t always like art museums, but because I tried it more than once I found out that I might actually enjoy and go again to a different art museum. I am happy with my choice to pick a museum as my academic assignment because it opened me to a new way of relaxation and fun.
