First-Year Seminar 2017 – DMB

MoMA- Carolyn Seminario

I recently attended the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for an art assignment and the FRO blog post. Honestly, I really liked this museum because all the art exhibits were enjoyable and colorful. The museum is about 10-15 minutes from Baruch in Midtown. I did not get lost because it had a huge sign that said “MoMA” that you can spot at least two avenues before. I believe they did that big sign in order to get people to come in and see the art. Also, the outside looked very modern like glass doors and glass windows. To me, things made of glass are considered modern because it is luxurious and would not be used and other decades. When you enter the museum you automatically see art especially huge ones that grab your attention which I think is done on purpose so the person can feel excited for what is in store once they actually go see the exhibits because I was. If you enter through the 53rd Street entrance, the first thing you see is a huge mural like painting on Sol LeWeitt, like color blocking full of colors like red, purple, orange, yellow, green and blue. Each box in the painting was a different color and I stayed there for about 12 minutes trying to understand the bigger picture and bigger message of this painting in each color box. There was six floors in the museums and each floor was with many rooms. The sixth floor was dedicated to an exhibited about if Fashion is considered Modern Art? Although I was not able to see that floor, I hope I get a chance to attend before it closes. Some of the pieces I saw was He Did What He Wanted by Yves Tanguy (picture below), The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, The Birth of The World by Joan Miro, and The Lovers by Rene Magrittee.

Diversity Pipeline Career Programs Panel & Networking- Carolyn Seminario

Baruch College is an outlet for a variety of opportunities where you can get many internships, part time jobs and even a full time job in the field that you want. However, many of these opportunities go unnoticed because of missed information sessions or students may be unaware that they are taking place. I know that I am one of those students that was unaware of the daily events that happen regarding all of these opportunities. I recently attended the Diversity Pipeline Career Programs & Networking event where I got to hear about different programs available for internships mainly for summer 2018. I learned about what each program has to offer, the requirements and application process. Each of these programs are focused to offer minority students different opportunities like mentorships and internships.

I found it very interesting that there were internships available for freshman because most freshmen have no experience or a small amount since we are still at the beginning of our college experience. But, that was the whole point of the event, to provide us the resources in order to begin gaining experience in the fields that we want. There were about eight program recruiters that spoke in the panel. Programs that were at the event were ANY, HACU, INROADS, MAIP, MLT,SEO, MODERN GUILD, and T-HOWARD FOUNDATION. I am really interested in four of these programs for the summer which are ANY, INROADS, MLT, and SEO. I plan to apply soon in order to start gaining experience in my field. I am hoping for the best outcome and get an internship. Events like this can really help students advance their career process.

Latinx Heritage Month – Carolyn Seminario

Blog #1: Student Life

My college experience has been so far great! I love the friendly environment here and the variety of opportunities Baruch has to offer. Besides so many opportunities, there is many extracurricular activities to join that I don’t think I will have enough time to join many clubs besides one or two. Baruch also celebrates many heritages through many fun events. There is always something going on in the 2nd floor lobby which is great because it keeps the students engaged.

On September 7th 2017, I attended the Opening Ceremony for Latinx Heritage Month and it was a great experience. It was very welcoming and exciting. There were many clubs in attendance like the Ecuadorian Club, Undergraduate Student Government, Latin American Student Organization, ASEDOM (Dominican Association), The Ticker and Assoc. of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA). Also, all of these clubs were giving some type of food. LASO gave out platanos with salami and chicken and ASEDOM gave out Mamitas ice cream, which was pretty cool. WBMB Radio, DJ Spintech, had the crowd dancing to different genres like bachata and dembow. There was so many people dancing. At first I was just there looking at the people have fun, since I am shy, until a dance teammate from high school, Wandaly, pulled me to dance. By dancing with here, we got cute cups as a reward for participating. Later on, the dj played some more bachata and that was were Thanayri and I danced for about 15 minutes straight. This event was a fun experience for me and I hope there are more events like this. This event made me think about joining some of the clubs there.

One of the clubs that I want to join is Latin American Student Organization(LASO). Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the first General Interest Meeting for Latin American Student Organization but I do plan to join this club later on this semester or the beginning of 2nd Semester. I also plan on joining ALPFA because it seems like a great way for me to begin networking and a way to learn more on how to be in a professional setting.

I was so happy to see that the Latino community is represented in such a fun and vibrant way. This event made me feel that I am welcomed at Baruch and made Baruch feel more like a home to me.
