Response to “The Art of Noise” by Luigi Russolo

“Noise accompanies every manifestation of our life. Noise is familiar to us. Noise has the power to bring us back to life. On the other hand, sound, foreign to life, always a musical, outside thing, an occasional element, has come to strike our ears no more than an overly familiar face does our eye” (Russolo).

Walter Ruttmann – Weekend

The human race is surrounded by noise anywhere and everywhere they are. One can be in the middle of a dessert, and one will hear the wind, the sand as it goes off with the wind, or our body movements as we walk through the dessert. We tend to ignore and not really notice all the noise that surrounds us. If we hear the noise on a regular basis, we tend to become so adapted to it that we unconsciously ignore and forget that the noise is even there. We additionally forget the impact it has on our surroundings. In the audio called Weekend by Walter Ruttmann it begins with sounds we might hear but unconsciously ignore. From the sound of a bell to the sound of a starting sound, to the sound of a cash register opening.

In the Audio we also hear the repeated sound of a man and the sound of what seems to be a young child. The other unexpected sounds throughout the audio of a flying airplane, singing man, ringing phone, alarm, constant banging etc, almost makes one feel as if this was made in a time of war. Yet it also forces one to listen to sound we may ignore on a day to day basis. As we listen  to this audio art form, we begin to notice the sounds we might hear everyday. When we notice these sounds and can relate the sound to what might be producing it then the sound helps us create an image in our mind of what it is we are listening to. When listening to this specific audio i pictured an old man speaking, a little boy responding, all in black and white images. I also pictured an airplane passing by a small town in time of war as the bell of a church rang as well as an alarm, to let others know that war is on its way. I think all sound creates an image in our brain, no matter where we are because noise is a part of our daily lives by which helps us see with our ears.
