Antoinette (Bertha)– Main character from the novel Wide Sargasso Sea by Jane Eryes. She’s a young creole girl who is neglected by everyone except her slaves. She attended a convent school when neither her step father or mother was around. She became lost in her own world and was isolated from society. She had an arrange marriage where she marries an English man. Her husband’s actions aggravated her mental health. Soon she became insane forcing her husband to lock her in the attic of his home in England. After a haunting dream she decide to set the house on fire.

Annette-  She is Antoinette’s mother who is young and is considered beautiful. She is a Creole, a person who has European background but was born in the Caribbean islands, which is why she is treated like an outsider by White Jamaican women. Her first husband was Alexander Cosway but after his death, she married Mr.Mason. Throughout the book, she shows signs of unstableness which led to madness. Some believed she became insane because she feels abandoned, scared and persecuted. After her house was burned down by angry free slaves, Mr. Mason puts Annette under the care of a black couple. The black couple mistreats Annette and actually makes her mental health worse. Eventually Annette dies when Antoinette was still in convent school.

Rochester- Husband to Antoinette which was an arranged marriage. Meanwhile he was paid to marry her by her step brother. Since he is the youngest son of a wealthy Englishman he travels to seek financial independence in the West Indies. He will obtain Antoinette’s wealth and property. He knows nothing about Antoinette when they marry, but soon realizes the mistake he has made and causes Antoinette’s mental downfall. 

Christophine-  A servant form Martinique  gifted from Alexander Cosway to Annette as a wedding gift. She is wise and loyal to Annette and Antoinette and she practices Obeah  which is a voodoo black magic.

Mr. Mason- A wealthy Englishman who goes to the West Indies in search of more money. He became the second husband to Annette and intends to restore  the Coulibri estate. After the slaves burned down the Coulibri estate , Mr. Mason abandons Annette and her daughter.

Aunt Cora- Sister of Annette and a widow to a wealthy slave owner. She sincerely cares and supports Antoinette unlike Annette, and  she puts Antoinette  into Covent School too. she returns from England after a year and gives Antoinette her two treasured rings.

Alexander Cosway- First husband of Annette, father of Antoinette, Pierre, and other illegitimate children. A despicable slave owner who drank himself to death, his fortune went away with the Emancipation Act, freeing the slaves. This left his wife and children with very little money.

Amelie- A servant of Antoinette and Rochester, who is disrespectful towards Antoinette. She slaps Antoinette and calls her a white cockroach, then she has sex with Rochester and leaves them the next day. She left for Rio where she found a rich men.

Sandi Cosway-  One of Alexander Cosway’s illegitimate child. Instead of calling him her step brother she would call him “Cousin Sandi” instead. He would look after Antoinette and protect her from harassment when she walks to school. Sandi was considered more handsome than any white man and was actually accepted in white society. Daniel Cosway, another illegitimate child, indicates that Sandi and Antoinette might have had a sexually relation when they were younger.  This assumption was backed up by the memory of a goodbye kiss Antoinette had with Sandi.

Daniel Cosway- Another illegitimate child of Alexander Cosway. He sends a letter to Rochester to tell him about the madness that runs in Antoinette’s family.  Due to his half white and half black background, he represents the racially split in the family. Antoinette represents the cultural split in the family.

Richard Mason- Mr.Mason’s son from his first marriage. After spending years in Barbados, he moves to Spanish town and arranges Antoinette’s marriage. He offers Rochester 30,000 pounds and her inheritance if Rochester marries Antoinette. When he went to visit the married couple in England, he doesn’t recognize Antoinette. She became a madwomen who was locked up in an attic. Due to her mental health, Antoinette cuts him with a knife.

Tia- She is Antoinette’s only childhood friend. However Tia treats Antoinette more like an enemy than a friend. Tia would steal Antoinette’s clothes and take her money. The reason for Tia’s behavior is linked to money. Money seems to be more important than a friendship. Tia throws a rock at Antoinette during the night of the fire and cracks open Antoinette’s head.

Pierre- Antoinette’s younger brother who suffers from both physical and mental issues. It is inferred that his disabilities were a result of inbreeding and physical abuse. Later he dies from smoke fumes when his house was set on fire.

Mr Luttrell- He was Annette Cosway’s only friend. He had an estate that was neighbors to the Cosway’s house. Due to financial issues, he shoots his dog, swims out to sea and never comes back. His estate was reclaimed by relatives.

Baptiste-  One of the Servants of Antoinette. He is the overseer of the mansion and considered a wise man.

Godfrey- He one of Cosway’s servants who stayed after his master died. To Annette, he is greedy and untrustworthy. He constantly makes allusions to death and damnation.

Sass- A servant at the Coulibri even since his mother abandoned him. He leaves the Cosways when Annette loses her money but returns when Mr. Mason arrived. Annette also thinks he is greedy and self serving.

Grace Poole- A servant who looked after the insane Antoinette. She was offered twice the amount of pay of other servants to keep Antoinette from escaping the attic and to keep the secret of Antoinette’s insanity from spreading. After her usually drinking, she falls asleep leaving the key to get out of the attic in plain sight of Antoinette.

Leah- One of three servants who knows about Antoinette. She cooks for Rochester.

Mrs. Eff-  Head keeper at Thornfield Hall. She never appears in the book by is mentioned by Grace.

Mother St. Justine- Head instructor at the convent school. She informs students on how to become female saints, which includes teaching them manners and cleanliness. Her main goal is to make them into proper christian ladies.

Mannie- He is a groom who is one of Mr. Mason’s new servants.

Maillotte- A black servant who is not Jamaican. She is Tia’s mother and Christophine’s only friend.
