Introduction
(Even though pictures were not available for the slavery time period in Jamaica, sketches were made to show how people revolted, and this picture is self explanatory)
Slaves in Jamaica held the same fate as every other slave in the community. White slave owners always prevented their slaves from learning anything because knowledge was power. The Amelioration Act was soon passed in Jamaica and that enabled slaves to learn and practice religion. This triggered slaves to realize how unequal they were to whites and also religion helped them recognize that their owners were no gods so how could they let them continue there reign over all blacks. In Wide Sargasso Sea, which takes place after the abolishment act was pass, Rhys writes of how inequality was still among them because it was a process for everyone to adjust to. In this exhibit we will compare many articles with Wide Sargasso Sea and explain how slavery, the construction of gender and race, and culture of death plays in Jamaica.
