When you talk about the history of skateboarding in New York City one place comes to mind, The Brooklyn Banks. Located under the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge, The Brooklyn Banks is known as the Mecca of skateboarding in NY and some argue the entire North-East. We can compare the Brooklyn Banks importance to skateboarding to that of Harlem’s Rucker Park in regards to basketball. It’s THE place. Some of todays most popular skaters commented on the Brooklyn Banks saying,
Chris Pastras – “that was like the meeting place for everyone, from jersey, from Long Island, from Staten Island, everyone would meet at the Brooklyn Banks so that was, that was the
spot.”
Sean Malto – “this spot is so iconic It was one of the hubs for skateboarding.”
Chris Cole – “it looked like a skater drew this masterpiece of just basically brick waves everywhere.”
Paul Rodriguez – “it has its own identity it has a long history.”
Mike Valley – “It’s the best skate park in the world, because it wasn’t supposed to be a skate park,”
Jeff Pang – “The Brooklyn Banks now… is a completely different place, the banks are still there but they’re not really skate-able but what sprouted up around the banks are all new skate spots” “that’s what’s beautiful about New York City, it’s constantly evolving”
